Details:
Haystack’s debut album “As We Appear” was released in late 1977and in its breeding ground the Wairarapa, (New Zealand) it was well received. It was recorded under considerable time pressure which resulted in an album that left us ultimately a little dissatisfied with the final product.
With a point to prove, we booked Wellington’s new Cresecendo Studio in January 1979. Over several days we put down six tracks, most of them more complex than the first album songs.
The core members of Haystack reunited in the North East of England in June 1980 while doing the big “O.E.” and formed a new band called Jester with Polish drummer Geshu Garnys.
The Crescendo recordings, sent as a demo to a Stockon on Tees radio station secured us another chance to record some new songs. These were recorded as a band with only one track for overdubs – effectively we played live. We recorded 10 tracks in a day and understood a little of how the Beatles managed their first LP in 1963. The new tracks show the urgency of the occasion, propelled along by Geshu’s brisk drumming . Their rawness and energy were in some ways more satisfying than the carefully constructed tracks of previous studio sessions.
So here are the fourteen songs that two sessions at opposite ends of the world produced. Songs that have sat quietly in our personal archives for 30 years, now unearthed, dusted off., re mastered at Life of Riley studios and ... finally released!!
Perhaps a launch of the second album 30 years after its predecessor is in the air.
Who knows? Whatever happens, its great to bring the songs to life and share them with you.
