Greetings listeners! A little backstory for you about this album:
I can''t read or write music but I hear melodies. So much, in fact, that I ended up with insomnia in 1992. Imagine every radio on in your house, full-blast, on different channels and all of the music coming out is your creation. I heard so much, so loudly that I couldn''t sleep for nights. When my handwriting started to change I called music studios for help. Most thought I was bonkers! One guy, Tom Ford, invited me to his studio in northern California and, for a year, we co-produced this "Peripheral Vision" album.
Creating these songs was a pivotal factor in shifting my life from having tunnel vision on a career ladder to having peripheral vision as an explorer. I decided after completing these songs to jump off the ladder and travel around the world for 20 months in search of the human experience. I believe music intervened in my life to lead me to this juncture and all the years that followed so these songs sat patiently in a box and never got distributed until now.
The first song I did with Tom was an instrumental called ''Apostrophe S''. I can compose basics on a keyboard and scat so we had some way to get the songs out of my head. We had so much fun that we started working on other songs where I could use poems I''d written for lyrics. During the second song, ''And Time Again,'' Tom asked me to lay down a vocal melody as guidance for the singer we would bring in to sing my lyrics. After laying down the scratch vocal Tom hit the reverb button and said, "You''re the singer for your songs!" He mentored me and, fortunately, gave me space to create without pressing for a commercial formula. Along the way, great musicians helped me bring these songs to life.
