Details:
Penny & Roger have shared a love of folk music ever since they first met in 1976. In 1982 they began writing and recording their first album in their living room in Balmain, Sydney, and began performing as a duo in folk clubs around N.S.W. After being rebuilt in a backyard shed, The Restless Music studio became the hub of the Sydney folk scene, and Penny & Roger also recorded two more of their own albums before moving to Stanthorpe, Queensland, in 1987, just as their recording of Bill Scott’s ‘Hey Rain!’ was receiving airplay thanks to the interest of ABC broadcaster Ian McNamara.
The Restless Music studio was rebuilt yet again in 2 rooms of an old Queenslander overlooking Storm King Dam near Stanthorpe and Penny and Roger began touring extensively for the Queensland Arts Council in 1990. Touring in country areas encouraged Penny & Roger to write and perform with a new focus. Their albums since then have reflected their involvement in rural life.
Although they are not household names or major label artists, Penny and Roger have been making music for 25 years and have made 14 albums, and many of their songs are well known and loved by millons of Australians. Songs such as ‘Hey Rain!’, ‘Where The Cane Fires Burn’, ‘Beside A Railway Line’, ‘The Monkeys Sing Soprano’, ‘Ridin’ On The Fruit Train’, Don’t Let ‘Em Close Our Mill and ‘The G.S.T .Calypso’ have been taken to the nation’s heart through airplay on national radio.
