Hi Everybody,

Thanks for your interest in my music.

This CD is dedicated to my Mom, Joyce, who passed away in the fall of 1998 from pneumonia, after having been treated with chemotherapy for Leukemia.

Song for Mom, is probably my personal favorite of all the 4 CDs I have produced because I love the variety of forms and instrumentation.

The pieces span from a variety of periods of my life. For instance, Cynthia, is essentially the first song I ever wrote(back in 1991) during a time when I lived in Greenwhich Village, in New York City. I was having a major crush on a woman named, well yes you guessed it, Cynthia.

We never wound up together, but the real gift of the experience was showing me how the act of composing could transform my pain and frustration into something that was delightful.

The opening piece, Kailua Dreams Enchanted Lake, was created in 1996, after I had lived in Hawaii.

The last area I lived in on the island of Oahu was Kailua, more specifically Enchanted Lake. I had thought that this was just a quaint name, but people assured me this was not the case. I could never quite get directions to the lake, which only increased my suspicion.

One day, as I was walking home a different way, hiking up, up, and up, I reached a vantage point, and wouldn''t you know it, the lake was in plain sight.

Five Capoeira Songs, was written in 2002, after having participated for a couple of years with a group that practiced this dance/martial art from Brazil.

If you''ve never seen some really good Capoeristas live, I highly recommend it. The movements are very engaging, and the rhythm and chanting are stirring.

My version of the music of Capoeira retains the lyrics, yet after the opening solo I bring in different melodies and rhythms. Also, I use more melodic variation, harmony and counterpoint than is traditionally used.

The title track Song for Mom, was also written in 2002. I wanted my Mom to be at my wedding in some way, and to honor all that she had done for me. She was truly a great woman.

The wedding was held outdoors in one of my favorite places in Austin, Texas. There are beautiful hiking trails, lily ponds, and lots of peacocks.

Towards the end of the piece, there is a moment where the oboe comes in with a very high note. It was at this moment where all the peacocks cried out. I like to think my Mother was sending her love.
