Outsiderz 4 Life
Unlike many groups hand picked by producers and granted an instant recording contract, the members of Outsiderz 4 Life have struggled against all odds to make the music in which they believe . Todd White, Alan Healy, Dave Smith, Jimmy Marble and Jason Dowty have been through a roller coaster of ups and downs, but their unshakable faith in themselves has them poised to become music''s next house-hold name. "We were never like, ''If we come out...,'' we were always like '' When we come out...,''" says Alan. "We knew if we kept making good music, sooner or later it had to break through.
Growing up in Newport News, VA, Todd White had only one goal - one dream - to create a successful R&B group. Back then it may have been more about the money and girls than the music, nevertheless, his dream has become reality.
With Todd''s high-energy enthusiasm setting the tone. He enlisted good friend Alan as the first member. A lot of the time, they were more into causing trouble than making music. "Music is what got us out of trouble because it got us seeing a whole different light on what you could accomplish," Alan says. "It kept us strong."
Dave was more obsessed with extreme sports - from snowboarding to skating - than music. But when his older sister passed during his sophomore year of high school, he was lost. Alan, who''d been a friend since junior high, asked him to join the group. "He thought it would be cool for me to have something positive," Dave recalls about the difficult time in his life. "Alan was like, ''Yo man, you should just come and sing in our group.'' It helped me in so many ways that I cannot even describe it."
Jimmy had been singing since he was 5 years old. Growing up in Newport News he sang in a rival R&B group. When the group went from a part-time hobby to a legitimate musical endeavor, Todd realized he needed to recruit some serious vocal talent. Luckily for them, Jimmy was available. "I heard some of their songs and I was like, man, I gotta get up with them, " Jimmy explains. "Every song was bangin''."
After a couple of failed attempts at aquiring a fifth member, Todd, Alan, Dave and Jimmy were ready to move on as a four member group. Jimmy, however, knew a vocalist from a job he had at a local theme park. Jimmy called Jason and mentioned that he was in a group and wanted to know if Jason wanted to join. A reluctant Todd listened to an over-the-phone audition and was blown away. They mailed Jason a copy of their demo Jason was equally impressed. "Every song sounded like it was already on the radio." claims Jason, "I just dropped everything."
With their new line-up launched, Outsiderz 4 Life was on track. It wasn''t long before gaining attention from multiple record company CEO''s and industry folks. Not only were they powerful singers, but they were producing, arranging and writing all of their music.
Since then Outsiderz 4 Life has worked with the top talents in the R&B and hip-hop world. They''ve had production from Timbaland (Aaliyah, Missy Elliot, Jay-Z), Teddy Riley (Micheal Jackson, Janet Jackson, Blackstreet), J-Dub (Notorious B.I.G., P. Diddy, SWV) and Bud''da (Aaliyah, Snoop Dogg) just to name a few. When they weren''t writing their own hits, like "Not Enuff" and "Ain''t Never" (a duet with Aaliyah), they were being graced with the writing talents of Static (Aaliyah, David Banner, Truth Hurts) and Lil'' Mo.
Thanks to the success of their hit "Not Enuff", Outsiderz 4 Life has shared stages with the likes of Alicia Keys, 112, Ludacris, and Mandy Moore, just to skim the surface.
