Details:
My wish is to have my musical composition to be sung and played around the world in every language possible. There is so much conflict in the world-- I hope we can come together as brothers and sisters and heal the divisions among familes, religions, racial groups and nations.
In 1972, I composed and arranged “You Are My Brother” for a Community Brotherhood Program in the District of Columbia. I was an elementary school vocal music teacher and I witnessed community activities which did not always demonstrate caring, sharing and gratitude among the students and adults. Too often, girls and boys showed indifference to their teachers and fellow students. I realized then, that there was a new teachable moment through music.
After the composition was completed and performed, the entire school became involved with its melody and words in a meaningful way. It became a part of the school’s theme. In 1973, the song was programmed for the All-School Choral Music Festival at Constitution Hall and Mr. Joseph McClellan, Washington Post columnist, wrote: “You Are My Brother”… was one of the more moving compositions of the evening…expertly set to music by Judith T. Grove”. Even now, music teachers are inquiring about new copies of the song.
This song is now available as a digital download. I hope you will sing it in your home, church, school. community and in every city, village and nation. I also hope the United Nations will choose this song as a worldwide anthem. The lyrics are listed below:
LYRICS --YOU ARE MY BROTHER
Sometimes while passing along the way
Walking and turning our heads.
Saying some things aren''t our concern and never showing discern.
But we can''t stand alone like an island or a stone.
We must stop now, turn around--reach out our hand and smile and say:
You are my brother…I can be no other.
I''ve got to care. I''ve got to love.
I''ve got to give so I can live with myself and you, brother.
You help me too, brother.
So we can make this world a place, safe for us all.
Don''t wait too late.
For we---------are brothers.
