The first album since their 2004 professional debut Take What You Will, Walk This Road is the culmination of 12 years of ellipsis making music together. Described as acoustic soul folk, the trio generated a following with its intricate arrangements, thoughtful lyrics and beautiful harmonies. Rolling Stone & Scientist starts the album off with a funky, driving beat. Velvet, a tribute to easy, unconditional love, is reminiscent of a laid-back Sunday afternoon. Originally released on ellipsis’s first album, And So On..., Stowaway Ophelia was always a fan favorite. The new arrangement on this album showcases the band’s ability to build layers of rich, full sound from the simplest lines. Gone for Good is the band’s first foray into blues, while When I Speak highlights their ever-popular harmonies. The album is rounded out by ellipsis’s rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, which many fans have called their favorite performance of a well-covered song. Walk This Road, which also features Michael Thurber (Guggenheim Grotto, Bela Fleck) on upright bass, is the perfect lazy afternoon listen.
