My first impulse was to make a straight-ahead recording of Appalachian music. When I asked my Old Time-playing friends what they’d like to record, though, we ended up with three rough groups: Old Time tunes, both traditional and written by Chris Romaine; urban 1930s swing, vaudeville and blues; and a glorious collection of miscellany ranging from English renaissance and Irish tunes to a Provençal dance and an Incredible String Band cover. What unifies this mélange? The same qualities that make medieval and renaissance music my roots music of choice: authenticity of feeling, directness, and saturation with a particular mood or quality. So, enjoy these seventeen American Landscapes, combining American traditional music and the music of seasoned American performers. It works for me, and I hope it works for you.
