The Tangiers Blues Band was formed in 1998 after guitarist Chris Scianni (Dangerman, Echobrain with Jason Newsted) and drummer Dave Borla (Dangerman, Echobrain) met photographer/harmonica player Danny Clinch and discovered their mutual love for blues music. The first Tangiers Blues Band jam session took place on Thanksgiving night that year with other musicians and friends, including Huey from the Fun Lovin' Criminals, King from Cooley High, Mick Jones from Foreigner and tennis player/guitarist John McEnroe. The original line-up was formed after that with Chris (guitar), Dave Borla (drums), Danny (harmonica), Huey (lap steel), King (vox and guitar) adding their long time friends Dave Sellar (bass) from Darla Hood and Peter Levin (keys) who had played in various bands in New York City and currently tours with The Blind Boys of Alabama.
The TBB line-up changes from show to show, with a deep rotation of musicians they have known and jammed with for many years, and in many different configurations. In addition, they have many "special guests" who will sit in with them for a night when they are around including G-Love, Phil Lesh, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Charlie Giordano (Bruce Springsteen) and Chris' father, Joseph Scianni. The line-up on the TBB studio recordings consists of Chris, Danny, Pete, King and Dave Sellars with Jon Graboff (Ryan Adams and The Cardinals) on lap and pedal steel guitars and Mo Roberts (Shemeka Copeland) on drums. The recording was done in one day at Moon Palace Studios, mixed and produced by Tim Latham (Lou Reed, Tribe Called Quest) a long time friend of all the guys.
In the early days, The TBB had a weekly slot at Lot 61 (Amy Sacco's club in N.Y.C) where they started experimenting with their set list. They soon realized that by "down-dating" current hits and reworking non-traditional blues songs, they could appeal to an audience that was not familiar with the blues, while throwing in "up-dated" versions of blues standards and originals to appeal to blues enthusiasts. On any given night, the TBB can play a set including music by Lady Gaga, Elvis Costello and the Clash that morph into blues classics performed by Junior Wells, Muddy Waters and Albert King. The band has performed their eclectic set of blues from clubs in NYC like Joe's Pub to the stages at Bonnaroo (2009), opening for Gregg Allman (2011) and playing at Presevation Hall during Jazz Fest in New Orleans (2011).
Bonnaroo 2009 review
Leave My Blues at Home
by Ben Levin
Despite the rain, the humidity, and the peals of thunder, The Tangiers Blues Band brought the crowd to its feet Thursday night.
Sporting three-piece suits and a swagger to match, the band barreled its way through a set list loaded with crowd-friendly favorites from Buffalo Springfield's "Mr. Soul" to Jimmie Rodgers's "T for Texas" to Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women No. 12 & 35." The harmonica solos and guitar workouts lasted just long enough to get the crowd moving, and guitarist/vocalist King never let the energy slip.
What began as an audience held captive by the torrential downpours outside the tent quickly became mass of dancing concert-goers. By the time the Blues Band left the stage, applause had easily overwhelmed the thunder.
Joe's Pub Review
Tangiers Blues Band at Joeâs Pub
February 25, 2010
Made up of an all-star cast of musicians, the Tangiers Blues Band rolled and rocked the crowd at Joeâs Pub last Sunday. The 8 piece ensemble, fronted by a bedazzled and pimped out singer named King, brought the sounds of the South to the Big Apple. Playing TBB originals, blues covers of âMy Sharona,â and âFight for your Right to Party,â along with classic blues riffs, enough soul was delivered to move the building.
The heartbeat of the band lies in the collective enjoyment featured on stage. The spotlight is passed between members during every song. Instead of being led by one front man, the band is led by each memberâs creative contribution. Each tune, emanates the sadness of blues lyrics with the gritty, down and out, just-donât-give-a-damn fills of acoustic, electric and slide guitars, bass, piano, drums, and harmonica.
According to their bio, The Tangiers Blues Band started as a jam session, which initially included John McEnroe on guitar. Imagine channeling John McEnroeâs 7 Grand Slams and his notorious outbursts into a half stack. Assuredly, a winning combination. TBB members have played (or still play for) bands such as Fun Lovinâ Criminals, Dangermen and Echobrain. Additionally, Danny Clinch (harmonica), is a well known photographer and film director, having worked with and photographed many major artists (Tom Waits, Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, and more). He also directed a number of Live Music DVDâs (John Mayer, Ben Harper, Pearl Jam, Guster).
Full Roster: King (vocals), El Millionario (lap steel), Waterslide Slim (guitars), Sneaky Pete (piano), Chico Baja (drums), Dangerous Danny (harmonica), Lonesome Dave (bass).
