Details:
This song was written while hiking through the Cat Mountain circuit in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. I wrote it to give to a young woman who was singing at a folk club in Ottawa that I used to frequent. She had this powerful, mature voice, like Joan Baez, though she was barely out of high school. She was just a fantastic interpreter of others'' music - especially Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell. So when I wrote it, even though it''s narrated from a male perspective, I heard her voice singing it. I demoed it and gave her a copy which she thanked me for but, to the best of my knowledge, never performed. So it languished until I was getting ready for an extended trip back to homesoil in BC on Vancouver Island. I planned to record a few songs with my good mate and dab bluegrass mandolin player, Ira, and tossed this song out as a possibility. He latched onto it right away, and it was really his enthusiasm that made this song come together.

Michael Munnik and Ira Pelletier have been playing music together for just about as long as they have been playing music. Their collaboration began with the idea of a grunge band while meandering through a vintage car show in Mill Bay, B.C. Too few gigs ensued, as well as many projects apart - skid punk and post rock for Ira, progressive folk and Celtic beer-hall punk for Michael. It didn''t help that they often lived three thousand miles apart. But while they forged musical identities independent of each other, they kept a close eye on each other''s musical growth. Ira is now versant in hot bluegrass mandolin, through which he has captained the Nanaimo combo Skagway; and Michael has recorded two albums of his own indie-folk-rock. This project is a welcome salute to their musical friendship, as well as a chance for each of them to record some music that "doesn''t fit" with their typical work.

"Harvest Dance" was recorded late at night in Ira''s shed, on a Mac with one mic. Michael sings and plays guitar and bouzouki. Ira plays mandolin. (All the instruments were made lovingly by hand by Arlen Pelletier, Ira''s brother.) Michael mixed it on his dad''s computer, and then did a final mix in Ottawa, Ontario, at Ernest Ruppenthal''s place. Dave Draves of Little Bullhorn Studio did the mastering. This all happened in the summer of 2010.
