Etudes I, V, VI, and IX belong to a series of twenty studies grouped in four series, which in a veiled manner reveal Brouwer’s musical approach as an instrumentalist, and a pedagogue. The first two series were written in New York. The style is clearly popular, showing influence of Cuban music in his works. The third, and fourht series are written in the 1980’s after a long period where Brouwer did not write for solo guitar. In these studies Brouwer goes back to his Afro-Cuban roots, used as the propelling element, leaning towards tonality and modality to define what he calls “New Simplicity.”
