Mark Hershberger is the leader of the Global Jazz Trio, and he describes their music as a synthesis of rhythms, melodies and spirit from cultures around the world. These world jazz origins include but are limited to Mid-Eastern, Indian, Chinese, European, African, Latin, and American Indians.
The group''s message through their music is for world peace, love, hope and spiritual coexistence for all people in all nations, cities, towns and villages around the globe.
Mark is a native of Michigan and has a long history in the jazz and blues music scene in the Detroit/Ann Arbor Metro areas. He performed with the legendary STAX recording artists SAM & DAVE and Thad Jones and the Oakland University AFRAM big band. He studied jazz with Detroit Saxophone legend Sam Sanders. He completed jazz and classical studies and performance at Eastern Michigan University Jazz Band and in The University of Michigan Jazz Concerts and Combos in the jazz studies program. Mark also studies with renowned classical saxophonist, Don Sinta. Over the last 35 years, Mark has participated and creatively led various original jazz groups and about four years ago formed the new group known as, the Global Jazz Trio that evolved from the early creation of globally orientated musicians named EmusicMasters.
The Global Jazz Trio has played a series of Border''s Books and Music store concerts around Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor areas and continues to perform at Concerts at the legendary venues such as The Ark and The Firefly in Ann Arbor and Baker''s Keyboard Lounge and Bert''s Jazz Marketplace in Detroit . . . not to mention many other Detroit Metro Area Jazz Nightclubs, Educational Performances and Concerts.
Mark Hershberger (Saxes) and Richard Smith (Bass Guitar) started their collaboration about 12 years ago playing in various University of Michigan Jazz Concerts and coffee houses while attending U of M Music School. The Global Jazz Trio members are AFM Local 5 members as well.
Mark plays tenor, alto and soprano saxophones and has composed and performed for over 35 years with three CD releases on independent labels. His background includes playing & studying with musical greats Sam Sanders, Hal McKinney, Jimmy Allen, Doc Holiday, Marcus Belgrave, Muruga Booker, Thad Jones, Peter MadCat Ruth, Michael Colone, Sam and Dave and Perry Robinson to name a few.
Over the last three years legendary percussionist Muruga Booker joined forces with Mark and Richard to form the Global Jazz Trio playing Detroit Jazz with global reach...
Muruga Booker (a.k.a. Steven Bookvich) has performed with many Detroit greats including Hal McKinney and down at Baker''s with Art Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie in the 60''s and again down at Baker''s with Dave Brubeck and Perry Robinson in the MBR jazz trio. Muruga also played with the Paul Winter Consort and recorded together with them on A&M Records as well as with the Brubeck Generation, including Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan at Carnegie Hall, in New York City. Muruga, born Steven Bookvich played with jazz greats Herb Hancock and Wayne Shorter at the MAC World convention in Anaheim, California as well. He performed with Weather Report and has continued to create a rich tapestry of world music using his incredible percussionist talents to foster greater awareness of free funk, world jazz, jazz, blues, rock, Latin and ethnic music and the healing effects of a global music. Muruga brings fiery rhythms to the trio''s original jazz and global compositions.
Muruga played on the Grammy nominated album by Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia, "Blues from the Rainforest", His list of credits includes performances with Pharaoh Sanders at Yoshi''s in Berkley California.

Mark Hershberger in conjunction with Richard and Muruga produce their CD''s together and the newest CD planned for release in winter 2005 will feature the trio live in Detroit Michigan at the world''s oldest jazz club, Baker''s Keyboard Lounge. This upcoming CD is takes us to the roaring 20''s where the nightclubs are thick with smoke the the musicians and poets speak the voice. The trio appeared in the "Motor City" in spring of 2004 and recorded this live performance. The Global Jazz Trio brings a magical and healing energy to their music and catch the listeners through infectious energy and spirit.
