This record/project is the soulchild/alter ego of multi instrumentalist Ricky Valente.
28 at the time of it''s recording, he returned to his native Rhode Island upon exile from New York City to make this record. A soundtrack for the night - beautiful, spooky and seductive. It is at times, in the best way, uncomfortably intimate and seething. Bearing musicianship and a sonic fingerprint that is fairly uncommon in an age of auto-tuners and software based computer recording.
The Bull and The Butterfly''s debut album "Lovers" was recorded entirely to tape in a basement studio, with the bulk of the recording done late at night, when the inner thoughts are the loudest.
All songs were written, and all instruments were performed, recorded and mixed by Ricky Valente.
Mastering by Fred Kevorkian
Everyone will find something to love about this record.
Ricky''s note on the song "Chelsea Hotel" :
"Yeah...that one. The mix you hear is the only one that exists. The tape was disintegrating as it was being mixed. See, I bought this particular brand of tape that I later found out put out a bunch of bad reels. Well I ended up with one reel from the defective batch."
"I did a practice (mix) pass and, heh, yeah, good thing I recorded it because by the second pass, the tape was quite literally disintegrating - MELTING - on the fucking tape machine. What a mess. It was a pretty big disappointment at the time. So there it is, no more ''Chelsea Hotel'' after that pass."
"Anyway, it wasn''t until the next day that I listened to it, and realized. The thing is, it''s about a particular person - this one. So when I listened to it, I realized that it couldn''t be any other way. Without getting into it, It just sounds like us - kind of dark. Beautiful but a little worn out, you know? You can hear it coming apart."
