I had started working at a new company in the summer of 2010. On one of my first projects, I had to work closely with a gentleman named Doug. We spent days working on our project and we began telling each other stories of our lives. One of the stories that Doug told me was of the unexpected death of his son, Allen. Allen was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes when he was eleven years old. Allen had controlled diabetes from the age of eleven until he was 8 days shy of his 24th birthday. On March 31, 2010, Allen was beginning to feel like he had the flu. He had decided to lay down for awhile and ended up passing away in his sleep.

Tests later disclosed that Allen had passed away from Diabetic Ketoacidosis, a life - threatening complication to Allen’s diabetes. This complication is often mistaken for the flu, as many of the symptoms are the same.

Several weeks after Doug and I successfully completed the project we were working on together at work, Doug sent me a poem he had written about Allen. He stated that he had heard my single of “My Immortal” and wanted me to record a song using his poem.

This was an honor for me and the recording studio to do. We decided we would record it and then release the single on March 31, 2011 – the one year anniversary of Allen’s death. We also decided that all of the sales of the single would be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

With the support of a few award – winning artists and producers, this song took all of us on an emotional rollercoaster. What came out of it was all of our passion, sensitivity and emotions. We took time to read all of comments from Allen’s friends on his obituary site. Some were sad, some questioning what happened, some had a little fun to them. I personally cried when I came to Doug’s comments to his son. This added to the raw feeling that comes through on the song.

So, as of March 21, 2011, in memory of Allen, you can help support the JDRF by downloading the song, “As Time Drifts Away” off of iTunes, Amazon, or any other major online download site. If you would like a physical copy, please go to https://www.tradebit.com.

When I asked Doug what message he wanted to convey with this song, he immediately said this: “It’s preventable –Diabetic Ketoacidosis is preventable”.

And with that said, we sincerely hope you have a heartfelt reaction to “As Time Drifts Away”.
