Tango Roto means broken tango, and Johanna Juhola Reaktori break the tango mould with their playful, open attitude. Juhola’s fantasiatango style, which she debuted with her previous release, draws on the combination of acoustic and electronic instruments as well as a cinematic atmosphere.
This is the third album to be released under Juhola’s name. Her previous releases include the solo album Miette (Texicalli Records 2006) and Fantasiatango (Texicalli Records 2010). Both received excellent reviews in the press and Fantasiatango also spent four consecutive months on the World Music Charts Europe list (https://www.tradebit.com).
Juhola is not only known for her mastery of the tango but also as a charismatic and enigmatic performer, as well as a virtuoso who naturally combines various kinds of musical styles. She is also considered to be one of the most important innovators in accordion playing and the tango in Finland.
In Reaktori, Juhola plays with three other equally passionate top musicians. Alongside Juhola, the album features three tango compositions by Milla Viljamaa, a top name in folk music for piano and perhaps the world’s only tango harmonium player. The respected and charismatic sound designer Tuomas Norvio has worked not only with Reaktori but also the modern circus group Circo Aereo, Rinneradio and the Wimme ensemble. Sara Puljula is one of Finland’s most popular bass players and she plays in ensembles such as Pekka Kuusisto & Luomuplayers and Spontaani Vire. She is also well-known as a theatre musician in many of Finland’s largest theatres.
"This is true musicianship. (***** five stars)"
"Juhola is, along with Kimmo Pohjonen and Maria Kalaniemi, one of the great innovators of accordion music. Disruptions are contrasted to beauty, storm to calm, childhood to aging and cheerfulness to pomposity. Unforgettable and impossibly beautiful."
"Johanna Juhola follows her own path as a musician and composer and gives new features to accordion as an instrument."
"To get an ensemble like this (Johanna Juhola Reaktori) to make the music is a real jackpot for any performance. Johanna Juhola is not only one of our leading accordion artists but a charismatic performer as well."
"The best part of this tango show is the orchestra. A tip for friends of Argentinean tango Nuevo: the band in the Tango Roto show is excellent. Johanna Juhola Reaktori performs the compositions of Johanna Juhola and Milla Viljamaa with phenomenal skill and wonderful passion."
"Johanna Juhola is top class, at least the equal of Maria Kalaniemi and Kimmo Pohjonen in 5-row accordion skill and compositional creativity, but very much in her own styles bridging acoustic and electronic."
"The music reminds me of Edward Scissorhands, amusement parks, Buenos Aires tango halls, dark conifer forests and Pippi Longstocking in a toy store. It is at times spirited, at times sad, and at times mystic."
"This is tango-based, fresh and joyous fantasy music. The album is full of exuberant colors, clever tricks and gentle playfulness."
