"coming off eerily like the smiths or a revitalized suede, this toronto based band mixes glam rock with the slightest trace of more aggressive rock vigor, exemplified by the closing ''crinoline''. the brilliant closing track resembles radiohead at the top of its game. the title track starts off with a credible if imperfect melody, but the pretty and morbid groove in ''falling for the oldest trick in the book'' is similar to suede''s ''down'' in tone and tempo. brian scott''s guitar shines through over lead singer joshua norton''s emotive, brit delivery. ''lazy'' is anything but, with a great and deliberate guitar building one crunchy guitar riff after another. keyboardist dan mathers adds his touches on the song, which only adds to its shine. there are also obvious influences from the cure, especially on ''i follow, you lead'', which allows each instrument to enter the song in the introduction, with the vocals beginning after more than a minute. thankfully, only a couple of songs sound a bit forced or tired, perhaps attempting to recreate the early to mid-eighties alternative rock sound perfectly, as ''without'' is evident of that. ''lizzy stride'' consists of a mid-eighties pop rock slant but with a lovely guitar solo at its core. obviously, the highlight has to be a softer, more melodic guitar-driven ''my last night ends just as it began'', with norton hitting all the right notes along the way. but equally brilliant is the anthem-like ''abductee'', particularly its long and winding instrumental closing."
brothers joshua and jared norton, brian scott, susan dobson and kristin maling formed maybrick in 1996 while attending york university. all sharing a variety of musical tastes, ranging from british pop to heavy metal, they began to write songs and book themselves small shows throughout toronto and the surrounding areas. the band quickly gained a small but respectable following of devoted fans after only a handful of live performances and it soon became clear that maybrick needed to move a step further. in 1997 maybrick took their distinct sound into hitzone and metalworks studios and began working on what would soon be a stellar first commercial release, ''white noise''. released in 1998, ''white noise'' celebrated a new stage of growth for the band; they started to develop an even greater attendance at shows, bigger venues were booked, opening slots for international touring acts soon followed and best of all, a clear vision of what maybrick could become was realized. as time moved on and the band grew, changes were made. kristin maling left maybrick to pursue a career in graphic design and was replaced by dan mathers. already a close friend of the band, dan fit in as if he had been there all along. in late 1999 while grounded due to a string of injuries, maybrick began to write new material and revamp some of its older songs. themes of frustration caused by the down time and inability to play live slowly crept into the writing of the new material. as the band reached an all time low, suffering yet another injury, all of the anger and frustration was expressed in a song entitled "break up the band", (a therapeutic attempt at reverse psychology for a band that seemed to have been dealt an impossible string of losing hands). defiance powered the band to move forward and fresh songs began to bloom. they could once again get back into the live scene and what had not destroyed them had in fact made them stronger. in 2001 maybrick recruited the talents of producer jason steidman and began pre-production on its second studio project.
today maybrick has released its second full-length recording aptly titled, ''breakuptheband''. this nine track cd expresses deep emotion, the strength of will power and a devotion to meaningful music that is truly its own. delivering infectious songs, universal themes and captivating hooks this band will take you away to another world, a world you won''t soon forget. maybrick will pilot its audience into that world as they tour and showcase extensively over the coming months promoting their moving new release. the sheer power of the songwriting is inescapable and with a live show to back it all up, this band will break new ground.
let yourself enjoy this band.
