A Little Farther Out CD Thoughts from Tony Mergel
Blues To Grab You (Composed by Ladd McIntosh, Arranged by Tony Mergel)
Originally a big band piece, I’ve always thought this was an extremely interesting treatment of the blues, so arranging it for the tentet was a natural decision. Listen to the interaction of the trumpet and trombone. They start off bickering and end in a full out fight. Thankfully they reconcile and the music can continue!

Concertante Mosaic I and II (Composed and arranged: Tony Mergel)
This composition was originally written for and performed by the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra and my jazz septet. It’s in four movements, two of which are performed here.

Lament For My Mother (Composed and arranged: Bruce Cassidy)
My mother had a tragic life and suffered greatly. This song is my tribute to her. (Bruce Cassidy)

Aranjuez(Theme composed by Rodrigo, arranged by Tony Mergel)
This theme by Rodrigo is one of the most famous works ever conceived for guitar and orchestra and is part of the “Sketches Of Spain” album by Miles Davis. I’ve always been captivated by this music and love the way Steve interprets the guitar solo.

After 9:00, Very Dark (Composed and arranged: Tony Mergel)
For many of my years at Humber College, I had the pleasure of working with Don Johnson, an internationally renowned brass teacher, on many administrative and musical projects. As we approached ominous deadlines, fearing we weren’t going to make them, Don’s favourite saying was: “It’s getting dark”!. I’ve thought of that many times and wrote this blues as a memento.

AfroDyzziac (Composed by Manny Albam, arranged by Tony Mergel)
A highlight of my musical life was studying at Eastman School of Music during the summer arranging/composing workshops, with Manny Albam and Rayburn Wright. Each workshop featured a special guest artist, in concert, and one year it was Dizzy Gillespie. Manny wrote this piece as a feature for Dizzy. Manny was kind enough to give me the charts for AfroDizzyac, which I’ve rescored for the tentet. It was performed once at Eastman, once at Humber College.

When AfroDizzyac was performed at Humber, John McLeod played the trumpet solos. John has gone on to become a great big-band leader, featured jazz trumpeter, and arranger/composer.

Band Personnel

Tony Mergel (Piano, Keyboards, Musical director)
Arranging, composing, performing, and teaching music has been my life’s work. I’m privileged to be able to earn a living doing something that doesn’t feel like work to me. Starting out on the accordion, I eventually moved on to piano and keyboards. I spent much of my career overseeing the music program at Humber College, and for the last 12 years of my teaching career worked with the Merriam School of Music in Oakville Ontario, teaching and developi8ng curriculum.

Shawn Moody (Trumpet)
Shawn is our lead trumpet player. He was a student of Don Johnson at Humber College and has carved out an enviable career as a lead player in big bands and at the Shaw Festival, as well as other theatre and recording projects.

Bruce Cassidy (Trumpet and EVI)
Bruce is featured on: It’s Wednesday Night Again, Concertante Mosaic I, AfroDizzyac, and Lament for My Mother, playing EVI (electronic valve instrument) which is MIDI’d to a synthesizer sound source. He is one of very few artists on the EVI and his performance on it is nothing short of stunning.

Patricia Wheeler (Alto Sax, Flute)
Patricia has just completed a Master’s Degree, at York University, and is working on her PHD, researching the music of Henry Mancini. Her section playing and soloing in our group are just what the doctor ordered!

Tom Skublics (Tenor Sax, Clarinet)
Tom and I met at Humber College in 1981 when he began his studies there. After his first year, he began gigging extensively and I was happy to hire him on many occasions. He’s one of my most appreciated friends, as well as a first call musician.

Rob Somerville (Trombone)
Need a trombone player who reads anything you put in front of him, plays great solos, and is a treat to socialize with? Call Rob Somerville. This guy is just a joy to have in a band.

Mike Bechamp (Piano, Keyboards)
He plays piano, keyboard, and organ exceedingly well and knows more about computers than anyone else I know, plus he knows a ton about sound production, and was best man at my wedding. He is just a great guy to have in the band.

Steven Cole (Guitar)
Thanks, Bruce, for recommending Steve to me! One listen to Aranjuez and you’ll understand why we all love Steve’s playing. And he’s another guy who’s great to hang with.

James Hill (Bass)
Pat brought James to the band and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. James is just the kind of bass player you love to have in your band: reliable, solid, creative, and who locks in with the drummer.

Dave Patel (Drums)
The drummer is the engine of the band, and Dave is a finely tuned precision motor who provides the energy and drive for us. Dave’s wide experience gives the solid foundation to any style of music that we play.
