* LATIN BURGH, written by Carlos Ortiz IV, was inspired by all the Latin Bands that he has been a part of during his time in Pittsburgh. The song came to him in a dream and when he woke up, he spent the rest of the day writing it till it was complete.
* DYNO WALK, written by Kyle Oestreich, is a tune that started out as two separate chord progressions and grooves that were brought together to form a Dyno Walk. The bulk of the melody is played over a loose swing feel with an emphasis on hits, while the intro and outro grooves in a five meter. The section in five was partly influenced by Robert Glasper''s recording of his original tune Canvas.
* CHURN IT, written by Mark Jackovic, has the Asection representing his girlfriends'' mood when everything is going to her plan. The B section represents when that plan doesn''t work out. Mark solo represents a further destruction of that plan.
* WITHOUT YOU, also written by Carlos Ortiz IV, was inspired by what every great love song is inspired by; a broken heart. Originally composed in his undergrad and was revised with a new bridge and new chords for this group. The bass line motif that is heard in the beginning was composed a day before the recording and was not written in the original. The motif seemed to work as a good intro so we stuck with it.
* WOOLLY BUGGER, written by Kyle Oestreich. The chord progression behind Woolly Bugger was composed through experimenting with different progressions while soloing over the great Monk tune Straight No Chaser. This straight ahead twelve bar blues was changed to use an unexpected turn around not typical of most blues tunes. Woolly Bugger is the most effective type of fly used in fly fishing.
* BLUES FOR S.J., written by Carlos Ortiz IV, was inspired by Sean Jones who is my current teacher and one of my trumpet heroes. Not too many people can say they are able to study with their heroes.
