My childhood cowboy idols were Autry and Rogers. Years later
when I heard country legend, Willie Nelson, sing "my heroes have
always been cowboys," it inspired me to "pick up my pen" and give
songwriting a try. Writers and artists like Jennings and Orbison
were influential, as were others in the 50''s and 60''s. I felt the fire
of Dylan''s words, the magic of every Mercer, Webb, Bacharach,
or McCartney track, and closed my eyes in disbelief when I first
heard Jose Feliciano''s version of "California Dreamin." I''ve traveled
with the carefree drifters, Miller, Haggard, and Russell, while
George Strait invited me to Texas. My wife and her Irish heritage
are also somewhere in every song.
After 25 years of "pitching" ideas to major labels, writing jingles,
and winning songwriting awards in both the U.S. and Canada, I''m more
eager to write now than when I first began. As a kid dressed up like my
childhood cowboy idols, I had no idea I''d be doing it seven decades
later performing with the Honky Tonk Heroes.
Finally, Thom Schyler''s 16th Avenue, has greatly inspired me
and I''ve used it to encourage Southern Utah Songwriters Association
members and writers everywhere who will create the lyrics of songs
we have yet to hear.
