Born in Viet Nam, raised in Pennsylvania, Ly Tartell''s life and music project the warmth, energy, and dynamic nature of the many cultural influences that surround her. Her debut CD, "The Call" mixes musical influences as varied as Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson, Pat Metheny, Take 6 and Sandi Thom. These cuts feature outstanding instrumental performances from Steve Allee, Jeremy Allen, Steve Houghton, John Wojciechowski, Greg Jasperse and Joey Tartell, with rich vocals from Monty Arnold, Heather Pistorius, Sue Moninger, Judy Hanson, Mark Myers, Alex Hall, Derek Fawcett, Keith Bertrand and Bryan Farina. Ly''s unique combination of jazz, pop and r&b sensibilities produce a seamless and modern take on standards and originals alike.
Ly Tartell enjoys an active schedule as a performer, arranger and conductor in the jazz and pop music idioms. Her solo vocal talents have been highlighted in small group, big band and orchestral settings. She sang for the Walt Disney Corporation as a member of the groups Vocalworks and Disney’s All-American College Jazz Band Singers where she performed with such legendary artists as Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Dianne Reeves, Diane Schuur, and Maureen McGovern.
As an educator, Ly is in demand as an adjudicator and clinician throughout North America and has served as a vocal clinician for Showchoir Camps of America, the Steve Zegree Vocal Jazz Camp and the Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival. She has conducted the WI, IN and IL All-State Vocal Jazz Ensembles, the MS and AZ All-State Show Choirs, as well as various district and regional choral festivals. She directed the vocal jazz, women’s, and mixed choirs at Purdue Musical Organizations (Purdue University – West Lafayette, IN) from 1997-2003.
Ly enjoys writing vocal arrangements that have been featured by high school and university ensembles throughout the world. She is currently working on her first CD, “The Call”, which will benefit School Construction Projects in Haiti. She received her BM from the University of Miami (FL) and her MM from Western Michigan University. Ly resides in Bloomington IN with husband, Joey, and daughter, Jamie.
