My Mother sang to me before I was born. I grew up hearing her voice lilt through our home while she washed, ironed, cooked, and cleaned. We sang while driving in the car on long trips, shopping in the stores for gifts, or preparing holiday buffets and for all our guests who attended. In her latter years, my Mom didn''t recognize me. However, she remembered every word to every song she ever knew. I found my comfort and memories in her voice because her music was woven into the fabric of my life. Years ago Mom went to sing with the angels on Christmas Day. It is because of my Mother that eveywhere I go I have a song in my heart. Seeing Lena Horne on TV and hearing her sing "Stormy Weather", is the second reason I became a singer.
I met my childhood best friend, Erika Callais, when we were about 9 years old. My Dad began to teach us how to play guitar. By our early teens we formed a folk duo, "The Two Tones." Erika''s Mother, Fern, a professional nightclub singer, dragged us around to the swanky beachside hotels and clubs. We''d play poolside or perform for the guests enjoying the "Hootenanny." As we got older we ''d head to Coconut Grove to hear Fred Neal, the musician who wrote"Everybody''s Talkin'' At Me." It was so great to grow up with the Miami and Fort Lauderdale hotel entertainers. Every place had music wafting out the doors. But, things change. Eventually, Erika went on to sing professionally and I got married and had a family. Life separated us, but not our friendship. We still talk to each other though we live so far apart.
LIfe took me down a lot of paths. Wonderful and interesting places. I began singing, professionally, years ago after my divorce. I have enjoyed performing with so many professional musicians from Miami to the Palm Beaches, Sweden and Germany. I am proud to have been part of the renown group "The Marshall Turkin Classic Jazz Ensemble" for more than 10 years, as their lead vocalist. But, the best thing I''ve done is meet and marry Baldy. Retired, from Germany, he was a trombone player and the leader of a big band. Now, we make beautiful music together.
Years ago we met D. Morgan and her husband, Ed Messer. Soon after, Doris and Ed became our close and dear friends. Doris is one of the most licensed artists in the country. Her artwork is so popular because of her heartfelt poems beautifully woven into her paintings. After mentioning to Doris that I had promised many friends and fans a Christmas album, someday, she approached me with several of her most popular verses and asked if I could put them to music. Since I had written many of my own original songs over the years, I was eager to see what I could do.
How exciting that D''s words evoked such precious melodies from my heart! It provoked me to write a few songs of my own. What a delightful experience it has been to perform all the songs on the album using different "personalities" of my voice. We had such a great time recording and we hope you can hear that as you listen. We also wanted you to sing along. So, we printed the lyrics insert.
What a labor of love this has been! Enjoy the results of this special album. In hopes that you do, we have already mailed in our special request to...."Dear Santa."
