You can never make music perfect enough. I hated putting the finishing touches on these tracks and closing the studio door. There is never enough perfection in the human voice and you never run out of ideas for improvement.
For those of you who don’t dabble in music, a revolution has been occurring in technology that allows more of us to create directly for sale. Via MIDI patches a keyboard becomes an orchestra. This gives a good producer a lot of choices at a reasonable budget – producers have become arrangers, and anyone who can play a keyboard can do without a band.
Michael and I live together, which doesn’t always bode well for work. He has extremely high standards, is quick on his feet, and very demanding of vocalists. But he also makes the process fun: dancing along to the beat as he’s putting in breathy ‘haaaas’ to the background track for ‘Not Gonna Get It’.
‘Fifty’ was written a few years ago and recorded at another studio in New Jersey. Not having the master track with us, we started over again from scratch. That allowed me to fill in at the end with my own vocal improv hitting a high C as we fade the song – just barely audible – which is something I’ve always wanted to do on tape. I think it works. The whole song has a retro ‘Doors’ feel to me.
We both love harmony and – unlike many lead singers – we can actually do it. That was fun. I love the old school close harmonies on ‘Waiting For You’, ‘We’ve Got Each Other’ and ‘Take Me Away’. When I first heard it, it sounded like The Supremes.
