Artist Mirra Jensen pondered how to show the world that a myriad of life‟s experiences and exposure to musical styles danced around her head and heart before releasing her second album „Guiding Light‟.
How do you define a musical labour of love, in a day and age where it seems that “..each new successful artist with a unique sound has a new genre named after their style”?
Mirra‟s first studio album The Sound contained the very first songs Mirra had ever written. Along the journey of recording and releasing that album, she found she had a backlog of more than 100 tunes, just waiting to be brought to life.
Being, a Gen Y with a penchant for technology, Mirra set up a home studio to capture her ideas in preparation for her next studio production. She soon discovered she had a stack of songs in the bag that were so close to her vision for „Guiding Light‟, that they only needed the touch of a seasoned studio producer to complete them. Finding a producer who could draw on Mirra‟s range of influences - including opera, orchestral string music, 80‟s pop and ancient Gregorian chants, with a hint of esoteric and a touch of dance, was like searching for the proverbial needle in a hay stack!. After searching far and wide, Melbourne Producer Tony Hunt, from Sonic Boy Records, was brought on board to „cut „n polish‟ Mirra‟s tracks into their final mixes.
More than the journey of developing into a budding producer, „Guiding Light‟ captures Mirra Jensen budding as a person.
“I was so excited by the freedom that I had to capture ideas in my home studio that I just stayed up each night and layered and layered and layered each track. Every new beat, or sound, or harmony line just seemed to open up even more possibilities” says Mirra. “I didn‟t set out to choose the compilation of tracks for the second album, I worked though them in order of the that I had for them.”
Many of the songs on „Guiding Light‟ explore deep themes of spirituality, after life, personal development and the trials and tribulations of following your passion. ‟Guiding Light‟ opens with „Something Else‟ a poignant song prompted by Mirra‟s response to the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The album traverses through the explorations of „Mystery Falls„ the idea that all the mysteries of life become completely clear to us once we die. In stark contrast, „So Easy‟ was penned by Mirra in just an hour) after a dinner table discussion with her parents and soon to be in-laws about the very real journey of finding love, being ecstatic, and the momentum of energy that this creates in the world …”and how the whole world smiles along with you too”…
