People and place are at the heart of Shallaway''s vision. It was from this vision that our opera project sprang - the same wellspring of all of its cultural endeavors. The opera Ann & Seamus commemorates a daring rescue. In 1828, a brig carrying 200 Irish immigrants destined for Quebec, foundered in a summer storm offshore Isle aux Morts on Newfoundland''s southwest coast. Over three days, 17-year old Ann Harvey and her family carried out a valiant rescue of 168 souls from the vessel, grounded three miles offshore. Kevin Major made the story more familiar with his verse novel Ann & Seamus from which this opera was inspired.
Stephen Hatfield''s realization of Ann & Seamus unfolds on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Scenes 1-9 preview Irish and Newfoundland forces that will eventually converge in the horrendous shipwreck and daring rescue - on the Irish side, the voyage of the immigrants, and on the other, a picture of the Harvey family life in Isle aux Morts, and their response to the sea disaster. Scenes 10-14 follow the unfolding of the love story of Ann & Seamus.
