Counterfeit Sunshine is the band’s new release and it is chock full of indelible hooks and choruses. The record’s birth started well over a year ago when vocalist Lee Harding met Steve Churchyard (Grammy-winning engineer for INXS, Pretenders, etc.) at a music conference in San Diego and kept in touch with him. It wasn’t long before live audiences showed the band that their new songs “Open Your Eyes” and “Counterfeit Sunshine” were strong enough to go “all-out” for in recording. Pondering what would be the “Dream Team” to bring the best out of these songs, Churchyard immediately came to mind as producer alongside engineer Alan Sanderson (Weezer, Rolling Stones, Elton John, etc.) with whom they already had worked. When Harding brought up Steve’s name to Alan, he said “Are you kidding?! He was my mentor. I learned everything I know from Steve.” The interesting connections didn’t end there — Steve had worked under Beatles producer George Martin in his earlier days in England and Harding learned to sing and play guitar imitating The Beatles. Could this be fate?
Steve was gracious enough to offer the band a good recording deal and the rest is now recorded history. Both Alan and Steve commented on the work as being one of the most memorable sessions they had ever done. Echo Revolution now had enough music for an EP but they decided to challenge themselves and release a full length and finished with Mike Kamoo at Earthling Studios, with whom they had worked on their first album. The new album track “Addiction” was done entirely in its second take of the song in the studio with lead guitarist Mark Sturino guiding the vision. As Harding relates, “we wanted a completely live feel to the song and Mark was the arranger of the track from the beginning.” The band caught one of those rare in studio moments where all the stars aligned, the track was effortless, powerful and everyone, including the engineer felt it.
Already having received glowing reviews from the press, “This throaty, powerful, and well-orchestrated pop album is the product of a band that thinks big and follows through on its thought.” (Starpulse) “…going down the list, “ Open Your Eyes” is a perfect upbeat song to set the pace for this album. Tracks like “High Road” and “What Say You?” show off a super funky, old school Spin Doctors feel, which puts a small hop in your step. “ Good To Be Home” would be on my playlist driving along the coast, along with the raw acoustic “When I’m Around You.”” (CWG Magazine) ““Mt. Washington” is the prime exhibit of the band’s softer minutes, with an acoustic guitar and faint backing vocals weaving space spanning horizons.” “Even in its most guarded moments, there’s an optimism to Counterfeit Sunshine that seems neither forced nor false, and thus it’s contagious.” (Starpulse)
