The CD is a sampling of different Native American Flutes played by Steve Pearson in a variety of improvisational styles. The flutes range from bass to soprano and all of the Native American Flutes are made by Butch Hall of Weatherford, TX. Styles range from the cheery soprano, "Dance of the Butterfly" to the somber "Lamentation". With the drum in "Lamentation" and the bass C minor flute there is a feeling of sadness like that of a funeral procession.
Some of the other tracks:
"Lover''s Duet" is unique in that it is an improvisation against another improvisation on the same flute in G minor. They play back and forth with each other until at the end they become one in unison.
"Kokopelli and the Wind" pits the soprano in C minor (Kokopelli) against a reproduction of a pre-Columbian ceramic flute (the wind). The wind tries again and again to rise and overpower Kokopelli. With the soft drum that accompanies it the wind is hypnotic and Kokopelli struggles to be heard.
Everyone always asks about the thunder and rain in "Canyon Shower Suite". They were not prerecorded. The flutes were really improvised against the live storm. It was thundering, raining, the wind was blowing and all the while the wind chimes rang and the hummingbirds buzzed back and forth. This went on for almost 20 minutes and I switched back and forth between the bass flute in C minor and a flute in C minor. I called it the "Canyon Shower Suite" because there are many mini-movements and since I do live in Colorado in the mountains Canyon seemed appropriate.
