Daniel Nicholls, the composer of âA Song for Kate (and William)â, taught Catherine Middleton the piano from the age of 11 â 13. He also taught her sister Pippa, her brother James and their mother Carole.

He and his wife Sandra live very close to the Middleton family home and thought it appropriate to write them a song to celebrate their engagement and wedding.

The song can be a sung in pop style and/or as a choral piece. It can be performed with the feeling of two lovers singing to each other or it can be sung almost retrospectively as if a third party is looking on â as is the world!

The words come from Elizabeth Barratt-Browningâs poem âHow do I Love Thee?â Sandra thought the words appropriate to a love which blossomed despite what might be perceived as difficult circumstances. Elizabeth was untouchable to Robert Browning as her father had forbidden her (and her 11 siblings!) to marry. However love won through (as it has with Kate and William) whose very public love has been an inspiration to everyone.

Details of the composition:

The song is a duet between a man (William) and a woman (Kate).
Williamâs theme is in the majestic key of Eb major (3 flats) often associated with royalty. It has assured sincere and expectant qualities.

Kateâs theme is in A major (3 sharps) a very distant key from Williamâs reflecting their different social standings. It has a breathy and hesitant feeling.

During the course of the song Williamâs theme (which, it transpires, is the chorus) is interjected by segments of Kateâs theme reflecting the joining together of the happy couple.

Finally the climactic point is a repeat of the chorus but this time the two keys of A major and Eb major converge midway in C major and the piece is left in mid air with the words âLet me count the waysâ. This is not the end but the beginning!

The choir âEnharmonicâ (formed last year by Daniel and Sandra) has sung this love song along with several other pieces of music written by Daniel. Last year they performed âPro Patriaâ, a new music/theatre experience set in World War One, to great critical acclaim and will continue to showcase Danielâs work in 2011.
