About Windborne:
We began singing together as teenagers at Village Harmony singing camps and quickly became enamored with the world folk traditions we encountered there, as well as the folk music we found in our own communities. In the ensuing years, we have all had the great fortune travel extensively with Village Harmony, Northern Harmony, and the Renewal chorus to study, teach, and perform music from around the world. This CD marks ten years of musical collaboration and friendship, and we are delighted to share our passion for this powerful music with you!

About our repertoire
The polyphonic singing tradition in the Republic of Georgia, on the Eastern shores of the Black Sea, has roots that stretch far into the past. Descriptions of Georgian singing from Classical Greek writers sound like they could be describing the Georgian singing of today. Georgia has retained its heritage and its unique languages through countless invasions and occupations, and we have fallen in love with its ancient music. For this album, we have focused on trio music from the western Georgian provinces of Samegrelo, Guria, and Svaneti, each region with its own idiosyncrasies of style, language, and tuning. In the Megrelian and Gurian music, Will plays his chonguri, a four-stringed Georgian instrument that is played like a cross between a flamenco guitar and a banjo.
The island of Corsica is located in the Mediterranean Sea, west of Italy and south of France. Although officially a French territory, Corsicans have a strong independent cultural identity and language. The trio singing tradition in Corsica is thought to descend from 16th century polyphony brought to Corsica by Franciscan monks. It is an oral tradition where songs are written with a sparse melodic structure, allowing singers to improvise by ornamenting around the core chords. The Secunda, or middle voice, leads with the melody and words; the Bassu, or bass, provides a solid harmonic foundation; the Terza, or top voice, fills out the chords. This structure holds true for both secular and sacred songs. As our Corsican teacher, Jean-Etienne Langianni, says, singing this music is a game, and we revel in the playfulness and power of this tradition. The three of us feel very fortunate to have travelled to Corsica to study the music in its native land.
Our repertoire in English draws upon a variety of North American singing traditions, including Shape-Note and Appalachian ballad singing, as well as more recent works from New England composers. Our arrangements often blend traditional and contemporary harmonies, emphasizing the connections between the old and the new.

Windborne won first place in Young Tradition Vermont''s 2010 Showcase Competition.

"The singers of the Windborne Trio have a deep understanding, both musically and culturally, of the traditions from which they draw much of their repertoire. Their singing is a feast of a cappella harmony."
