This all started at a Twins game.
After playing for years as the lead guitarist in the Minneapolis-St. Paul band the Hillcats, I took some time off from the guitar when the band quit playing regularly in 2001. Having two sons and being a lawyer took a lot of time.
When my older son was around 8 he started asking me if he could learn to play guitar. I thought he was still too young, but he took to it. So I started playing more as he learned.
In January 2009 was standing in a guitar store and had a lightening bolt hit me when I noticed a new white Gibson Les Paul Custom. It was calling to me.
Shortly after purchasing that Les Paul (aptly named “Butter” and the subject of the song of the same name) I contracted a little known but wide spread condition called GAS – Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. You’ll see a picture of some of the guitars the CD insert. My wife is calling for a room addition.
With all these guitars, I started playing again regularly and stumbled upon recording software on our laptop computer. I started fooling around with it, and the result was the first song I had written in 10 years, “Hanged.”
Enter the Twins game. I was there with Michael Nelson (the bass player for the Hillcats and producer and engineer of "Pop & Rock") in August 2009 and told him about my GAS and my new song. Never one to pull a punch, he said “you should record an album with me.” And we did.
We started out with the one song. We tried to meet a couple of hours a week, and every time we met it seemed I had written something new. After I had 9 songs and almost enough for the album, I found a box of old cassette tapes (had to explain to my kids what those were) containing about a dozen songs I had written and recorded on an old home studio unit between 1992 and 1997. I played them for Michael and I jokingly said “we should do a double album.” And we did.
The first 10 songs are on the "Pop" disc, the second 10 songs are on the "Rock" disc. I''m a fan of both melodic pop and guitar-driven rock, so the songs logically fell into these two groups.
I hope you enjoy "Pop & Rock" as much as I enjoyed making it.
