Conceived after only a few months of being together, The Exploding Café showcases the earliest creative stages of Chicago modern rockers Plato''s Republic. This 7-song EP (from early 1997) demostrates the earliest Plato efforts of songwriting partners Joe Smith and Andy Eringis, including 2 numbers from previous collaborations with an earlier band.
Rather than withhold release or allow the demos to collect dust until the inevitable "anthology" or "B-sides" collection, the band confidently released and publicized this demo compilation as a document of potential and greater things to come. But even as its rough and rudimentary delivery is peeled away, popcraft gems such as "Miss Fortune", "I Wanna Be You" and "What Would It Take" demonstrate an uncommon level of rock songwriting finesse and intellectual wordplay oft-ignored by most popsters during the mid-90''s. A rough and admittedly low-tech recording, The Exploding Café still stands up in a class by itself.
