New Riders of the Purple Sage: "Wanted: Live at Turkey Trot"
In the middle of its sold-out summer tour of 2006, The New Riders of the Purple Sage took a special detour to Turkey Trot Acres in Candor, NY where it performed two sold-out shows and filmed a live DVD. A portion of the proceeds from all three events will benefit the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 480.
Turkey Trotâs Cruze Inn, with its open air design, was the perfect setting for the DVD. With nearly 200 people in attendance, the venue felt intimate and allowed everyone to hear and see the band. The indoor/outdoor pavilion enabled the audience to spread out on the lawn, hang by the picnic tables or stay inside with the musicians. Everyone was treated to a great home style backyard barbeque, and owners Pete and Sherry Clare made sure no one went hungry. The NRPS had a fantastic time and hope to play there annually.
The bakerâs dozen on âWanted: Live at Turkey Trotâ includes some killer jams such as the 16-minute Garden of Eden and the 12-minute Portland Woman. It is also chockfull of many other great John Dawson tunes as well as two songs by Peter Rowan, Lonesome LA Cowboy and Panama Red. The DVD is topped off with a new song to the NRPS set list by Mississippi John Hurt entitled Sliding Delta.
The New Riders, signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis, released its eponymous first album in September 1971 to widespread acclaim. In the next 11 years the band toured and released over 12 albums, selling over 4 million records. NRPS began as a part-time spin-off from the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia (pedal steel guitar), Phil Lesh (bass) and Mickey Hart (drums) teamed up with John Dawson (guitar, vocals) and David Nelson (guitar). Although early live appearances were viewed as an informal warm-up to the main attraction, the group quickly established an independent identity through the strength of Dawson's original songs. By 1971 Dave Torbert had replaced Lesh, and Spencer Dryden, formerly of Jefferson Airplane, had joined as the group's permanent drummer. Garcia remained in both The Dead and The New Riders until he found himself overcommitted, at which time Buddy Cage replaced him and the classic NRPS lineup was born.
Original NRPS bass player Dave Torbert and drummer Spencer Dryden have passed away, and co-founder John Dawson cannot lend his considerable talents due to ongoing health problems. Nevertheless, Dawson has blessed this new venture and is excited to know his music is being heard again to a whole new generation of fans. The new lineup vows to keep the NRPS spirit and tunes alive by taking them to fans everywhere. That commitment is evident on this DVD as the group continues to meld classic country harmonies and twang with great old school rock nâ roll and unworldly new jams. David Nelson and Buddy Cage â backed by Michael Falzarano, Ronnie Penque and Johnny Markowski â hit musical highs on every song on the DVD. The complementary soloing of Nelson and Cage is unparalleled, combustible and always thrilling. So kick back, turn it up and rock out to The New Riders of the Purple Sage!
