Details:
Punta Gorda's resident violin maker and master luthier has completed his CD project "Liars, Crooks & Felons", with a little help from Wingnut Flounder, Off The Beaten Path, The Short Fuse, Betsy Badwater and some other nefarious Florida talent. And it's all for a good cause, the profits going to Fr. Bart at St Mary's of the Angels in New Orleans.

From the CD Liner Notes:

Sometimes the blues are all that there is. Trying to find the right words to say, or maybe just being silent, it's hard to know, easier to just say what you think.

Sometimes the blues fill every pore, every dark place.
Music fills those spaces also. Making music with friends and for friends is an intense but short-lived joy. I would not part with it.

But it comes and goes, one moment you are in the harmony, and the next it is just a faded memory. Can you remember the last time we played together and you sat and listened? I can only recall that we did. Once, twice, maybe more.

So it comes to the place where time rules. There is no defense against it. Except one. This is it. Maybe in the years to come, in a place we don't even know yet, we will listen to this music and remember. This time, this place, these feelings.

The blues steal from life. But time steals life itself.
And not one of us is innocent of the theft of joy.

The Law says: Give what you can, take what you need, and leave the rest.

Yet we can steal from the music and we can lie to the blues. Hold someone's hand softly for a moment and you will see. Take joy from the moment. Do it shamelessly and without pause.

In the end, we are all liars, crooks and felons.
As yet unforgiven and feeling no regret.

R.J. Malloy - January 28, 2007

The Credits:

This has truly been a cooperative effort among musicians
both famous and infamous. The joy has come from the crossing of paths and the spirit that has been exchanged to make this all possible.

Thanks to Greg Trooper for "Lonesome" and "Dreaming Blues", which we then butchered into "Drinking Blues" for which Greg will likely kick my ass, but he'll have to catch me first.

Michael O'Connor sent us his incredible "Get Away Car" which we then colored with an accordian riff. If he's going to kick my ass, he'll have to get behind Greg. Since John Prine kicked my ass many years ago at the Earl in Old Town, I was faithful to his arrangements of "Hello" and "Home Town".

Now Paul Thorn, he's someone not to mess with. His "Things Left Undone" is certified as totaly true to Billy Maddox's original, except I sing it better. (Now I'm really screwed.) One of my original musical influences, Tom Rush gave us his version of "Urge For Going" and Joni Mitchell passed us the rights for the project. If I wasn't in such awe of speaking with them, I would probably say something witty here. But don't hold your breath. And finally, extra special thanks goes to Debbie Baker, who taught me that the blues and forgiveness can make for some mighty powerful, passionate music.
