Details:
''The Survivors'' have been a fixture in the alternative life-style culture in Florida''s Lower Keys since 1978, insisting on playing jazz, reggae, and calypso blends in a world hell bent on rock, blues, and country. They have opened for Taj Mahal, Youssou N''Dour, Los Lobos; recorded 2 songs for Jimmy Buffet''s ''Margaritaville Late Night Menu'' CD; played with Mr. Buffet, jazz vibes legend Dave Pike, steel pan great Othello Molineaux, Tyrone Downie of ''The Wailers,'' and...Root Boy Slim.
The core of the group is a trio, fronted by the Allen brothers Woody and Din whose seamless harmonies and bass and guitar banter set the groove, driven by drummer/percussionist Quint Lange. Add Key West local horn players Marty Stonely, Elmo ''The Hammer'', or Ken Fradley, and you''ve got the recipe for this band''s inimitable sound.
About ''The Original Grooves'': "The songs...range from jazz fusion to soca to blue-eyed reggae to whatever makes you want to groove...fine, well-written, and vocally and instrumentally perfect." Key West, The Newspaper
About The Survivors: "It''s impossible to think of the best times in town ... without hearing the Survivors as the soundtrack...they''re artists who entertain and continually renew the borders of their musical context." Solaris Hill
“How many times did we hear a tourist couple say, as they stepped onto the scene at a Survivors gig, ‘We’ve been looking for this all week!’ Well, now you know...You are here...en Cayo Hueso(in Key West).” from the liner notes...
