NPR''s Open Mic, April 17, 2007 · Anastasia Stasko is a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Auburn, Wash. Her acoustic, lo-fi debut is Sex and Death in My Bedroom, recorded over a single weekend on a Macintosh computer. Stasko has been making music off and on for almost ten years.
She is a senior at Western Washington University, finishing up a creative writing degree with an emphasis in poetry.
"Poetry only made me fall even more in love with my favorite songwriters," she said, citing Stephen Merritt from The Magnetic Fields, Jonathan Richman, Bruce Springsteen and Diane Cluck among them. "Last summer, my friends encouraged me to turn the poems I had written for class into songs of my own."
In February, she recorded those poems as intimate songs, including lyrics she wrote as early as her high school years, and posted them online. She got her first live performance experience in public school music programs and local open mics.
"For a long time, I felt I was never going to be good enough at [music]," she said, calling herself "hypercritical". "[But now] the only thing I want to do in my life is make music," she said. "And maybe meet Bruce Springsteen."
I made each one-of-a-kind cd with just a touch of magic, love and glitter so please enjoy!
