MP3 Justin Moses - Dusty Roads

Original bluegrass instrumentals with some great guest vocals.

12 MP3 Songs
COUNTRY: Bluegrass, FOLK: Modern Folk

With the help of musicians from acclaimed bands such as Blue Moon Rising, Mountain Heart, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, and the Sam Bush Band, Justin makes his solo recording debut. Besides playing mandolin, banjo, fiddle, guitar, dobro & bass, he also composed seven tunes for this project and makes his lead vocal debut. Producing and arranging the album himself, Justin pushed boundaries aside to create a project uniquely his own. With many different styles and moods throughout the CD, there''s sure to be something for every listener.

"Justin Moses of the Blue Moon Rising band is one talented young individual. Joined here by Blue Moon bandmates Chris West, Keith Garrett, and Tim Tipton, Moses shows his instrumental and vocal prowess on a project of mostly original material very nicely arranged and recorded...From the opening notes of "Old Federal" to the final phrase of "Turning Point," Moses demonstrates that if it has strings, he can pick it...This is an excellent first solo outing for a talented young man who appears to have a bright future in this music." "Moses plays mandolin, guitar, banjo, fiddle, dobro and bass, so his CD is an overdubbed thing of wonder. On instrumentals like this title tune, he gets to solo on each of his axes. On the vocals, he sings the lead, as well as the tenor and baritone parts. I wonder what his live show is like."

"Holy cow! Moses does everything except leap tall buildings in single bound so don’t be surprised to see Moses leap into prominence in the world of bluegrass. He does it all: lead, tenor, and high baritone vocals, mandolin, banjo, guitar, Dobro, and bass.
"Dusty Roads" is an energetic recording with fingers flying in all directions and most of the fingers belong to a multi talented Moses. His first single release features phenomenal musicianship from start to finish. For example, on several tracks, with over-dubbing, Moses is the only musician on a toe tapping "Old Federal," "Comin’ Up A Cloud," "Rounding The Bases," and the progressive sounding "Turning Point."
Whether he is playing alone or getting a little help from his friends, Moses displays a smooth innovative technique. His authoritative approach is fresh yet filled with the soul of traditional bluegrass. Speaking of friends, Moses has some good ones, including Blue Moon Rising Bandmates Tim Tipton (bass), Chris West (guitar and tenor) and Keith Garrett (guitar and lead vocal), and guests Steve Gully (tenor), and Andy Leftwich (fiddle).
Other favorites are "Heart of Alabama," a heartwarming love story, "Rounding the Bases" with a gentle Celtic feeling, "Dawn Brings Sunlight" a beautiful melody that is reminiscent of walking through a forest with a gently flowing creek, and the no holds barred instrumental, "Impact."

Moses is a one man band who will have you shaking your head in amazement. On a five point scale of excellence, this release merits a five."

"Welcome the awe-inspiring Justin Moses Show! This young man from eastern Tennessee not only picks masterful mandolin, guitar, banjo, fiddle, dobro and bass, but he also sings lead, tenor and high baritone vocals. Two-thirds of the cuts on "Dusty Roads" are also Justin Moses compositions. He gets my vote for "Best all-around in 2006," and his future in bluegrass music is very promising as both a performer and session musician as competent as a guy like Ronnie Stewart. "Dusty Roads" is the first solo project for the multi-instrumentalist who has played with Kentucky Wind, Sierra Hull & Highway 111, and who is now back with Blue Moon Rising, a band he helped form in 2000. Others featured include Keith Garrett, Lou Wamp, Steve Gulley, Bryon House, Andy Leftwich, Tim Tipton, Randy Jones, and Chris West.

Moses excels on his self-penned instrumentals, and all have plenty of fiery intensity. "Rounding the Bases" is a reel with triplets played on the mandolin that the piece has Celtic flavorings. On a more emotive note, "Dawn Brings Sunlight" is a melodic and harmonic excursion with a reflective mood. Tone, timing, and technique are all evident on the album. "Impact" makes just that, in a big time way, as Justin romps through dobro, banjo, and mandolin breaks. Randy Jones gives us a hustling guitar break. At times, the bass feels like it could have been equalized with a little more high end and clarity of notes. Justin''s lead vocals are featured on "One More Hill" and "He''ll Be with You," complemented by Steve Gulley (Mountain Heart) on soaring tenor vocals. Keith Garrett sings lead on "Heart of Alabama" and "Dig A Hole," the former a tenderly-rendered ballad about the life and toils of a farming family. The vocals aren''t gutsy and high lonesome, but they are delivered with convincing emotion in a lower timbre that works fine for contemporary bluegrass material. Some of Blue Moon Rising''s fans have been comparing Gerrett''s voice to Alan Jackson''s and Keith Urban''s. "Dusty Roads" presents a great many subtleties with impressive playing and evocative settings. Justin has crafted a very artistic set of music. Backwoods bluegrass it''s not. It''s simply some inspiring tunes from a very impressive talent."

-Joe Ross, Bluegrass Music Profiles Magazine

"Justin Moses can pick, seriously pick. From the opening notes of the first cut, an original instrumental entitled ''Old Federal'' he brings it on, not only the mandolin, but also banjo, guitar, fiddle, dobro, and bass."

-Steven Stone, Vintage Guitar Magazine

"...a killer collection of original instrumentals punctuated by some tasty vocals, tasteful arrangements and some real energy. This album really sparkles from beginning to end with one surprise after another...Thanks again for the sublime tunes!"

-Dave Higgs, Nashville Public Radio

"This project has all the bells & whistles of a first class production; beautiful singing, flawless instrumental work and excellent original material... If you love your bluegrass with an edge then this is the project for you. Justin Moses takes you up the mountain and lets you look down the other side before he brings you back. He takes bluegrass and keeps stretching it to the limit. The musicians on this project are some of the best in the business... I played the entire project and all of the songs were requested to be played again. Thank you for sharing your fine project with us."

-Al Shusterman, KCBL/Backroads Bluegrass

"GREAT STUFF! The great game of bluegrass music playing doesn''t get more All Star sounding than this, and it seems like its child''s play for the entire team."
