How did the Ripcords Come to be?
The Fabulous Ripcords began as a project put together by Rex Lyons to explore some of his favorite music using some of his collaborators in The Roustabouts formerly fronted by Dugan Henhawk. Dugan and Rex go way back to CNYâs seminal punk and roll band, Whiteboy and the Wagonburners, that set CNY afire in the late 80âs and early 90âs. Rexâs cousin, Irv Lyons Jr., was brought in to play guitar and sing along with Whiteboy alumni Phil Regan on the drums. Jay Gould (bass) and Scott Ebner (keyboards) complete the lineup for the Fabulous Ripcords. Both are veterans of the local music scene and former Roustabouts members.

How did you get to this point https://www.tradebit.come long goal or set of goals in a straight line fashion? Or have you built on things the way they have unfolded?

Well, first things firstâ¦musicians never do anything in a straight line. We think more circular than linear. Music cannot be straight line, there are too many possibilities. Right at this exact moment, I think the band is reaching towards the top of the apex. After ten years, we know what each other brings and capitalize on each individualâs strength and abilities. What we end up with is a sum total of great musicianship and sensibilities that result in great music. Our new CD Voodoo Girl is a great illustration of how we work. All the originals on the new CD, are a result of a sketch that someone brought to the band, resulting in a musical collaboration for a finished song. I think there are certain musical foundation rules that we adhere to butâ¦the song will go where it wants to and everything else will fit in. Itâs a natural process for the Fabulous Ripcords. We work well together, I can honestly say, we have never had any blowouts or anything like that. We have a great respect for each other. I like that the best. I couldnât imagine working with a group that was always at each otherâs throats. Donât get me wrong, we have our moments.., but at the end of the day we have always resolved any conflicts.

What are some of the highlights of your musical journey (either individually or for the band?) Was there a turning point sometime in the past that led you to where youâre at now? Are there goals that remain inattained that youâd care to share with the readers ?
For me, having the opportunity to play in the same band with the Fabulous Ripcords IS my highlight of my musical journey. This is the first group I ever played in. I had a huge learning curve and had to become a fast learner. The guys have definitely mentored me into a better musician. I am grateful for their time and patience. I would say for the Fabulous Ripcords, winning a SAMMY and the release of our new CD Voodoo Girl featuring all Ripcord originals is definitely a highlight.

Ripcords..A little about each of the other members in the band? People youâve played with in the past.

Rex Lyons is the respected guitar player, vocalist and band leader of the Fabulous Ripcords, sitting in regularly with Los Blancos, Pete McMahon, and other local luminaries around CNY. Rexâs style is equal parts country, blues, rockabilly, and swing. Rex is best known for his work with Whiteboy and the Wagonburners which rose to local and national acclaim. Rex has also played with The Mudd Kats and The Insurgence.

Irv Lyons Jr. is a talented vocalist and guitar player with a distinctive sound rooted in latin influenced jazz and straight ahead country and blues. Irv is a major contributor of original material for the band including straight ahead blues, instrumentals, latin, and roots rockers.

Scott Ebner is known for his barrelhouse piano playing and swirling Leslie speaker sound along with accordion, mandolin, guitar and songwriting. Scottâs playing is influenced by New Orleans, Nashville, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Payne, The Band, and Chicago blues. Scott has played at the Bottom Line in NYC, The Broken Spoke in Austin, and other venues with CNY native and current Austin favorite Penny Jo Pullus as a member of the âVanishing Breedâ. He has appeared at the Hillbilly Lane showcases in Austin Texas during the SXSW Festival and with Penny Jo at the festival. In the past, Scott has played and recorded with Kim Lembo, The Casual Dogs, The Z-Bones, Ron Spencer and Jumpstart, Penny Jo Pullusâs Trailer Trash, and Ron DeRollo. He currently operates Skunk City Studio and is responsible for recording and mixing The Tipphilllbillies releases, âRecipeâ (nominated for a SAMMY) and "Lucky", The Roustabouts âFried Chicken To Goâ, and the first release from The Fabulous Ripcords, which won a Syracuse Area Music Award for Best Americana release.

Jay Gould is a first call bass player who is an integral part of the Ripcords and an accomplished jazz guitar player. Jay hails from CNY but lived and played in Boston before returning to CNY. His work with The Roustabouts, Ron Spencer and Jumpstart, and Beyond The Pale in Boston show his deep dedication to roots and American music and skill at arranging.

Phil Regan is a veteran of the CNY music scene as a drummer for Whiteboy and the Wagon Burners and The Sputniks. Phil is a musicologist who is steeped in traditional American music and his jazz and roots influenced drumming is a major component of the Ripcords sound. Whether mastering the shuffles, cajun beats, country swings, or straight ahead rockabilly and blues, Phil brings authenticity to any song he plays.

The Ripcords have performed across the northeast to crowds in New York City and Boston as well as their home in Central New York at events including the New York State Blues Festival, Taste of Syracuse, Central New York Jazz Fest, the Inner Harbor Block Party, and the Ganandagan Native American Festival. The band and its members have opened for and played on bills with such noted musicians as Santana, Steve Miller, Blues Traveler, Ry Cooder, Rick Derringer, Phish, John Lee Hooker, Edgar Winter, Leon Russell, Kim Simmonds, Terrance Simien, Gene Taylor, Bill Kirchen, Dickie Betts, and Chip Taylor over the years.
https://www.tradebit.comre do you feel your music best fits? Blues, rock, Cajun, all around?

I guess it can be best described as Americana. You can really hear on Voodoo Girl all the different music styles we play. I think people really enjoy coming out to hear us because of that diversity in our music. I know for a fact that we play music that will make you dance. People love to dance to our music. One of our fans saidâ You know you are good band if you can make a woman dance, and you do make me danceâ. We are high energy and our music reflects that.

My Musical Influences/heroes/mentor

At age thirteen, I bought Abraxas by Santana. I absolutely wore the grooves out of that LP. Santana was my biggest influence. I wanted to play and sound just like he did. Even earlier, at age 4, I listened to Ray Charles. I loved his voice, and even then could feel his passion when he sang. Other influences were: Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Robben Ford, Don Rich, Jose Feliciano, Duane Eddy, Vince Gill, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Glen Campbell. Now, I do think John Mayer is a great guitar player and I listen to Pat Metheny. My mentors are my band mates, they take me to school at every practice and gig.
