The Lyra and the Tsambouna have survived on Karpathos for centuries.
Nowadays they stir every listener-visitor on our faraway island. In our times of alienation the traditional feast of Karpathos continue to offer us unique thrills.
In the form they are preserved today the songs of Karpathos and Kassos are
the most genuine representatives of Greek musical tradition.
The people of Karpathos want the age-old sound of the Tsambouna and the
rough but also rich and sweet sound of the Lyra to be the leaders in their feasts
and fairs. These two musical instruments constitute our musical tradition. The
history of the Tsambouna begins with the first steps of man on earth and it is the
leading instruments in performances of most of the songs of the Greek islands.
This is also the case with the traditional Lyre of the Dodecanese which is still
¨alive and kicking¨ today on Karpathos and Kassos.
We want the little bells on our Lyre-bows to jangle like the little bells on the incensories at our monasteries…
We want our feasts to have a slow pace, like a Kassian song…
Like a prow that sinks and emerges, patiently beating the waves of a rough sea…
