"Total Recall 2012" EPIC MACKROSOFT FUNK!
Aja West, producer of hybrid funk jazz and soul presents his long awaited masterwork, "Total Recall 2012". After leading super group The Mackrosoft through ten fantastically successful albums, Aja West takes a solo turn bringing along his most talented and prestigious friends.
Reggie Watts (Maktub/Soulive) co-writes and lends his incredible vocal styling to a slew of new funk pop jams. His sweet and strong voice has been compared to everyone from Chris Cornell to Marvin Gaye. The adventurous lyrics of "The Getaway" and "Out of Control" showcase Watt’s funky Sly Stone/D’Angelo type of vocal seduction at it’s absolute finest.
Money Mark (Beastie Boys), Fred Wesley (James Brown), Skerik (Les Claypool), Mike Clark & Paul Jackson (Herbie Hancock) and Cheeba (The Cheebacabra) are just of a few of incredible starting line-up of talent.
Composer Aja West keeps the production crisp and clean playing multiple instruments and easing in and out of the jams on vocoder and slinky effected vocals. Female sirens tempt the listener over the sparse groove of "How Many Lumps?" and "Penny in a Fountain" showcasing classic funky rhythm and blue. REVIEWS:
"The very bridge between the forefathers – Clinton, Stone, Hancock – and something like D’Angelo."
- Straight No Chaser
The best work yet from Mackrosoft modern funk maestro Aja West -- a deft mix of both live vampy funk and turntables-and-breakbeats styles -- a record that features a tight core group of players and exemplary work by keyboard wizard Money Mark! The Olympian has a richer vibe than we were expecting -- with lots of live drums, synths, percussion, strings, horns and other elements blended into a really atmospheric, straight up fun vocals by Aja. "A record that’s perfect… a classic 70s keyboard approach to funk!"
- Dusty Groove
"On an epic project, 27 musicians unite to drop a funky, winding tale of musical freedom. Hip-hop edges frame jazz, house and disco-soul as organic instruments mingle with digital manipulators in a seductive dance. Composer and executive producer Aja West has mad chops!"
- URB Magazine
"Minimal drum beats and deconstructed bass lines. Immediate underground funk!"
- XLR8R
"The Mackrosoft crew (brothers Cheeba and Aja West) have thus far sailed under the funk radar, but their mythic notoriety will soon become ubiquitous. Like Disney''s Electrical Parade on acid."
- Wax Poetics
"The slick, fluid instrumental jams here reside in that juicy, bubble-butted zone between the porn-flick score and the blaxploitation-film soundtrack."
- The Stranger
"Unbelievably funky ‘70s lounge-sleaze instrumentals. Slammin’,
sample-ready drum lines slathered with vibes, rhodes, sax, and strings from top players. All that’s missing is some Steely Dan-style crooning, or some Native Tongues-style rhymin’."
- Amoeba Records
"If the word "hipster" means anything to you, then The Mackrosoft are going to scratch that itch. Big fat "ill" and "dope" drum beats… The space between 70s jazz/funk fusion and instrumental hip-hop"
- Gnosis
"Funk-fusion at it''s utmost finest"

"The hottest musicians in funk, soul, hip-hop, and jazz come together with all original material. The album’s musicians are hot producers, bandleaders, and creators in their own right. Money Mark (Beastie Boys), Mike Clark (Herbie Hancock, The Headhunters, Printz Board, (Black Eyed Peas, Nate Dogg, Macy Gray, Skerik (Critters Buggin, Les Claypool, Alex Veley (Maktub, Dolemite), Cheeba (Dust Brothers), and Larry Crane (Brand X) among many others."
- Jazz Profile
"Afro-beat to Blue Note dance floor jazz, vintage fusion to current instrumental hip hop... an aural honey pot."
- Heads Magazine
"The Captain Beefheart of hip-hop."
- All Music Guide
"Hearkens back to the 70’s jazz-fusion giants, echoes of Passport and Transit Express show up along with sedate Chick Corea-like flourishes"
- Progression Magazine
