CAL LEONARD AND HIS ORCHESTRA is the brain-child (some might say "Red-headed Step brain-child) of David Whitney. "Mr. Irrelevant" is the debut album from this first edition of The Orchestra. It is a polticially-charged concept album that tells the story of Mr. Irrelevant--a misunderstood individual whose concerns and fears go unnoticed as happenings around the world continue to spin entirely out of control.
The Orchestra''s inaugural lineup featured on this album includes Doug Bossi on guitar, Matt Bissonette on bass, and the legendary Gregg Bissonette on drums. Originally a classically and jazz-trained musician, Whitney sings, composes all the music and lyrics, and adds additional guitars/keyboards/percussion on the album.
The sound of the record boasts a unique blend that combines the speed, energy, and sloppiness of punk, the anthemic choruses of heavy metal, the sophistication of 20th century percussion-era classical, the freedom of 50''s jazz, and the political awareness of 60’s protest rock. Sound too far-fetched? Listen to the entire "Mr. Irrelevant" album before making up your mind. Never one to be pigeon-holed, Whitney (a.k.a. Cal) subscribes to the musical philosophy often attributed to Duke Ellington, “There are only two kinds of music—good and bad.” (He plays both.)
