Caramelize is part of a new wave of artists fusing Spanish and English lyrics with alternative rock, and traditional Latin rhythms, melodies and instruments. The Brooklyn based band is comprised of California Chicano transplants Sandra Velásquez and El Chapulín and bircial African-American Jewish siblings Hillary Maroon and J Why.

"We Can Take 'Em Down," is a feisty, politically-charged collection of new songs that reflect the group's fervent concern about the state of the nation. "The Streets" was inspired by an anti-war protest in New York City. "Mutiny" offers hope that grassroots change is possible when leaders fail. And "Manos" ("Hands") is a lament for citizens of a nation at war.

But the band's trademark sense of humor is still in plentiful supply. They assail New York's lack of good Mexican food in "Fish Taco." Greed and celebrity worship are satirized in "Meal Ticket" and "Boyfriend." And "Citizen Carmela" celebrates the misery of lowered expectations.

The record was produced by Charlie Dos Santos, whose work with Cuba's Los Van Van won a 1999 Grammy for best salsa performance. Dos Santos has also been behind the boards on albums for Latin crooner Marc Anthony, indie rockers Cordero and the Buena Vista Social Club's Barbarito Torres.

Fish tacos, cholos on the L.A. highway, sweet poison and beautiful liars become poetic anecdotes and serious metaphors on this CD full of humor, heart, and social consciousness. Touches of regional Mexican, gypsy, reggae, and funk beats dynamically blend with this Brooklyn based band's alternative rock en Spanglish creation. A female voice that sometimes echoes Andrea Echevarri of Aterciopelados, and at other times resonates as upbeat Lhasa, is a pleasing auditory delight.
