I had the privilege of witnessing the introduction of what we know as contemporary praise and worship music back in the early ''70s, during the throes of the Jesus Movement. The music was not slick, but it was organic, real, and from the heart. Even though it was not sophisticated, especially by today’s standards, it came from “the trenches" of the church engaged in weekly worship.
Today, contemporary Christian Praise and Worship has come a long way. In some ways for the better; in other ways not.
You are holding in your hand a collection of songs that hearken back to an earlier time, yet are very current and fresh. They have come from the “trenches" of worship at the church I have the privilege of pastoring, Harvest Christian Fellowship in Southern California.
These songs were written by our worship leaders[emdash]Hanz Ives, Billy Batstone, and Steve Wiggins. Many of them came from ideas that I had from messages that I had given, after I wondered if this talented trio could perhaps write some songs to illustrate those topics.
It was Martin Luther who said, “Music is the handmaiden of theology.” Somewhere along the line, it seems those two things have been divorced from each other. So it has been my heart to get some good old fashioned “theology” (the “study of God”) into musical form. I could not ask for more committed and talented artists than Steve, Billy, and Hanz to make that a reality.
You will find yourself humming these choruses and and perhaps learning a few things as well. There is much more I could say, but just listen to it for yourself and enjoy. Better yet, worship!
