There can be few gamers out there who haven't had this age-old problem - you're keen to spend a few hours playing an old favorite which has given you hours of fun in the past, you go and get the disc and put it in your machine. You wait patiently for the loading screen to appear (and then disappear leaving you to play in peace), and nothing happens. You take the disc out and it is scratched. For the next fifteen minutes you blow on the disc, in the loading tray of your console or PC, then you rub the disc with a jumper, a tissue or anything else that might work. And still nothing. Video games have grown exponentially as a market over the last decade or so. with so many different platforms now available, and so many different games to play on them, there are more and more people playing now - and people of different ages, sexes and backgrounds, too! As a result, videogames became one of the few industries that held up well in the recession - kids and adults still wanted to play games and still had the disposable income to buy them. Getting a car or a house may have been more difficult, but games are pretty durable - and they give you hours more fun and novelty than a movie.

In times of financial strife, everyone becomes a bit more cautious. It is not necessarily the case that our earnings will drop, but the risk of one company going under and triggering off a chain of events means we all have to stay on our toes. Everyone is looking for the recession-proof job that will make them more secure - but when everyone is looking for it, the market becomes a little more crowded and offers little respite for all but a lucky few.
