THE JOURNEY THUS FAR….
The joys of the independent musician means that projects, such as this, can be time consuming and emotional journeys. This album, ‘Don’t hold your breath’, has been years in the making. Obviously, there have been a few reviews of the project over the years and dated, dusty numbers have been cast aside to make room for newer, fresher numbers.
The songs reflect my lifestyle and vocation. I am a sailor. I am often dragged off to foreign lands with many a sandy beach and trips to the studio can be few and far between. However, it is these voyages that bring the ideas and inspiration that I attempt to turn into some semblance of a song. The little gems sometimes slip out in one session and, at other times, they slip in and out of focus for years ! Gawd, if only I could sit down and concentrate on music…. But then I wouldn’t be doing what I do….. Ah, there in lies the rub. Who would pass up the opportunity to swim with sharks, dive on coral reefs, sail across the Pacific, throw up in the middle of a storm, run across islands, cycle up Tuscan hills, sip Champagne with bored rich people, run away from Komodo Dragons, barter for black pearls with a Goddess on a sun soaked atoll, jump off cliffs, climb Pitons…. you get the picture. It is often thought of as more glamorous than it actually is, but I won’t tell you guys that !
My songs are about circumstances and events; people and places and the way the two come together. Not all of it is based on fact, but a fair part of the time there is some inkling of truth in each verse.
I do so enjoy the musical journey and always look forward to studio sessions and becoming immersed in the music. Being surrounded by music and musicians, all moving in a slightly altered time zone & frame of mind to that ‘outside’, is…..enlightening. With the exception of editing drum tracks, which is a real drag.
The good news is (well, from my point of view) that there is more of the same brewing around in my head, just waiting for the right moment to emerge. I mean, there are stories about deep, cold water; being ignorant; being blessed (or just down right lucky); watching good friends mess up dramatically & laughing with them about it and even Russian invasions to enhance upon. Now who would pass that up ? Suffice to say, I could be busy in the studio right now, if only I could find the time….. I’m sure it shall materialise, just… don’t hold your breath.
