In November 2005, Niels graduated from the Australian National University with First Class Honours, a University Medal and the Peter and Lena Karmel Anniversary Award for the most outstanding music graduate. Niels studied under John Mackey and performed with and composed/arranged for all the university''s major jazz ensembles. Also in 2005, Niels was awarded a BBM Scholarship (music) which was a financial contribution towards gaining further experience and exposure in the United Kingdom.
Before recently moving to the UK, Niels worked in Australia running his own original music projects as well as working commercially and doing musicals. Throughout February to May 2006, Niels toured through South East Asia and performed in Bangkok, Pai, Chiang Mai, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and Hanoi. As well as the UK, Niels has also performed in Ireland, Itlay and Poland.
Niels has been performing professionally since the age of 16 and has performed at major jazz festivals around Australia and abroad including the The Edinburgh Festival, Sligo Jazz Project, Narooma Blues Festival and Wangeratta, Thredbo, Merimbula and Manly jazz festivals. Niels has also performed with Bob Sedegreen, San Francisco blues piano legend Mitch Woods and the Rocket 88s, Paul Mills (Average White Band), John Mackey, Miroslav Bukovsky (Wanderlust, Ten Part Invention), Eric Ajaye (Freddie Hubbard, Taj Mahal), Wanderlust, Mike Price, Annie and the Armadillos, Selene y su Quimba, Fiona Boyes, Chris Thwaite, The Hauptmanns, Jeremy Borthwick, Fabian Hevia, James Greening, Michael Azzopardi and Niels'' own band The Rosendahl Group.
