Details:
Oksana Herasymenko, Bandura â ancient Ukrainian music instrument. Born in Lviv, Oksana Herasymenko is a well-known Ukrainian bandurist. In 1982 she graduated from the M. Lysenko State Conservatory in Lviv (in the bandura class of her father, Vasyl Herasymenko). In the years 1974-1982 as the member of the Bandura trio (than included her sister Ola and Olha Voitovych) she traveled with concerts in Ukraine, Poland, Vietnam, and Japan. In 1978 the trio won the First Prize at the World Youth and Student Festival help in Cuba. Subsequently, residing in that country (1983-1991) Mrs. Herasymenko was very active as a soloist and also in duet with Carlos Puig â a noted Cuban musician and composer. Her first compositions â âSolo for Fluteâ and âPhantasyâ for Bandura Oksana wrote in Cuba (1987). At the invitation of the famous Cuban guitarist and composer Leo Brower Mrs. Herasymenko presented the Ukrainian bandura at the International Guitar Festivals at Havana (1986, 1988, 1990). Having accepted the invitation of the distinguished Japanese guitarist Ichiro Suzuki, Mrs. Herasymenko appeared as a soloist and in duet with him (1989-1991) at the International Guitar Festival in Barcelona, at International Music Festivals at Palamos (Spain), also in France and Japan. In 1990 she came to the USA for solo appearances and in duet with her sister Ola Herasymenko-Oliynyk. Having returned to Ukraine, since 1991 Oksana Herasymenko has taught at Lysenko State Music Institute, Lviv (now Music Academy). This work has proceeded in parallel with her performances and composition. In 1994 she traveled with concertos in Argentina and in 1999 at the International âWorld Guitarsâ99 Festival.â She was heard at the International Bandura Festival in Poland (1994, 1996, 1998), in Canada (2000), Croatia (2000). Herasymenko also took part at the International festival âLviv Virtuososâ (1995). Oksana Herasymenko 25th Anniversary as a composer-performer was celebrated in 1999 with extensive concerts in Kyiv and Lvivâs Liudkevych Philharmonic Hall. As composer, Herasymenko is represented by over 100 works for Bandura solo, for Bandura with flute (or pan-flute, violin, cello, piano, guitar, string quartet); she wrote music for theater, did settings of folk songs, various arrangements and transcriptions. Much of the above was issued in 10 printed collections. In the year of 2000 Herasymenko won First Prize at the International Hryhory Kytastyâs Competition for Bandura Compositions (Toronto, Canada). Since 1996 she is the member of the National All-Ukrainian Music Union. Since 1999 she is a member of the National All-Ukrainian guild of bandurists. On November 15, 2003 Oksana Herasymenko performed the world premiere of Yuriy Olinykâs Concerto No. 3 for Bandura and Orchestra with the Camellia Symphony Orchestra in Sacramento, California to the highest acclaim of the public and the critics. The Mystery of the Soul, of love; the enigmatic birth of music⦠All these are best described by just one Ukrainian word âTAINAâ. This is the title of Oksana Herasymenko first CD and on it the talented Ukrainian bandurist-composer featured choice instrumental works of various periods. Originating in many countries, where Oksana toured, the pieces often come to life impulsively, recreating a memoir or happening in the life of the composer. Wonderful images â âBlue Sky Melodie,â âSunâs Ray,â âAutumn Dreams,â âRain Fantasyâ â open up a curious world, painted with colors of music. With light, impressionistic touches the images charm with finds of timbre and strains of finesse. The music of these and other pieces seems enveloped by some mystery, secreted deep in the soul of its author, who confides only in her Bandura. And the unusual combination of Bandura, flute, cello and string quartet rather successfully transmits the dreamy mood of O. Herasymenkoâs music. Such combinations are like new pages in the repertoire of the old Ukrainian folk instrument. So listen in. Listen closely to Oksana Herasymenkoâs music⦠and the feeling of peace, of lasting beauty, and the sense of participating in a great mystery of art will never leave youâ¦
