Johann deStrand, a Norwegian songwriter/singer, is finally bringing his music to the people.
With melodious tunes and personal lyrics, he wants to share his stories of love, passion and heartbreaks with the world.
Johann deStrand, born 1980 in Stavanger, Norway, started from a very young age to listen to his parent''s record collection. He found specially interest in Elvis Presley, ABBA and then A-HA. He would spend countless hours listening and recording from the radio throughout his childhood and teens. He was fortunate to have access to music instruments as a very young kid, and he got facinated by pianos and keyboards. As a troubled boy, in some turbulent years, with a violent father, moving around a lot and not fitting in, he would find comfort and joy in making music and writing songs. Building a world of creativity around him, where music became his lifeline.
With a Yamaha Synthesizer he bought as a 15 year old, he would start his writing career. What was first a hobby would soon develop into a full-time passion.
Johann would over the coming years work on several demo projects with different producers, both in Norway and England.
He went to London a couple of times to pursue a
music career, without any luck, before he settled in Oslo for a few years. There he worked in the grocery business where he soon became manager in different supermarkets.
He went back to London in 2004 with a new demo and hard earned money, more eager than ever, to fulfill his dream. In 2005 Johann met Al Beard, former manager of Duran Duran and Scorpions, who put him in contact with producer Sefi Carmel. The result of their collaboration was ''A Boy''s Adventure Tale''.
With the help of producer Carmel, he would create a uniqe sound, combining electronic tools with live instruments, like guitars and piano. They used professional musicians, even a violinist, to bring alive the essence of the songs.
Having tried for years to find the right sound, being influenced by the the 80''s and the Euro music scene, he and producer Carmel would now give his songs a more edgy, contemporary approach. A lot of different guitars are being used on each track, giving a rocky feel to them.
The music of Johann deStrand can best be described as melodios pop with an edge, a hybrid of different genres, with elements of pop, rock and electronica.
Lyricly, the songs of Johann deStrand are mostly meloncholic and very personal, based on his own experiences and inner feelings. All aspects of love are being described with a heartfelt sensitivity. ''Living on the edge of life, as a sensitive person as I am, brings up a lot of feelings that needs to be channeled. Writing is a kind of therapy to me. A song often starts with a melody line that appears from a moody state of mind, as I am playing with chords on a piano or a keyboard. This develops in to a vers or a chorus. The lyrics comes as I go along. It can take hours, days or weeks until I''m happy with a song''.
A-ha has always been an inspiration to Johann and their songs and still strong-going career have had a big influence on him and his song writing. They were pioneers and door opener for many an artist in Norway, and in the rest of the world.
On this Ep you will also hear influences by Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys, with lots of warm strings and electronic sounds.
Creating music in a studio is what Johann really enjoys and feels at home with. Seeing an idea develop, through everchanging phases, and become a finished song is what he finds the most satisfying. ''It''s like magic'', he says, ''to work in a creative and inspirational enviroment that is a music studio, with professional people, and to be able to express my feelings in making music''.
Johann deStrand is currently performing his music live in London, where he now lives, making himself known to people and picking up friends on the way. ''Music is my life and having people all over the world enjoying my songs as much as I have making them, is my biggest dream''.
