Creator, composer, illustrator
Miranda Hentoff is the creator of Mandyâs Menagerie. She has written, produced and recorded all the music for the property. She has also created, illustrated and designed its characters in a visual style distinct and endearing. Mandy's Menagerie is a natural extension of Mirandaâs distinguished background as a songwriter, composer and music educator.
As an artist in residence at the Lincoln Center Institute in New York City, an aesthetic education program with sister institutes throughout the world, Miranda has worked with thousands of school children, ages 3-18. In addition to working with children, Miranda has used her creative approach of hands-on, interactive music education to teach preschool, elementary and high school teachers how to incorporate music in their classrooms. She has taught for sister institutes at the State Universities of Binghamton and Rochester, as well as Dartmouth College, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Memphis State University.
Because of her charismatic teaching style and ability to reach and motivate children and adults, Miranda was chosen out of the Lincoln Center Instituteâs three hundred teaching artists to help establish the Victoria Arts Center Institute in Melbourne, Australia. Her innovative teaching style also led to her work with special education classes in New York area public schools, where Miranda taught a program she developed that combined storytelling with music as an educational device. She also taught at the 92nd street Y Nursery School.
From 2002 to 2003, Miranda designed the music curriculum and taught for a pilot program at a model school on the campus of Hofstra University. Funded by the U.S. Department of Educationâs Fund for the Improvement of Education Program, the goal was to improve the education of New York State teachers while providing a hands-on alternative model for middle school teaching and learning. Miranda was instrumental in designing a curriculum aimed at deconstructing the artificial boundaries between academic subjects and the arts, encouraging the development of well rounded, informed critical thinkers.
Miranda began her teaching career at the Harlem School of the Arts, where she taught music theory, ear training, composition and jazz piano. She also taught music theory and composition for the preparatory divisions of The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music. Miranda has lectured on music and music education for The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and The Juilliard School in New York City.
Miranda earned both her Bachelorâs and Masterâs Degrees from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
