How does a Minnesota born and raised guy like Jeff Metil end up on darkened saloon and club stages in the music mecca of Austin, Texas?
For some musical troubadours, becoming a part of the Austin music scene happens pretty much by accident, but for Metil, he had his sights set on Austin for quite a while.
Three years into college at Baylor University in Waco, relocating to The Music Capitol was an irresistible career move Metil knew he’d have to make if he wanted to further a blossoming music career.
“Austin just seems like the natural place to be if you’re a musician,” Metil says. “There’s so many live venues and places for musicians to work for a living playing music, and if you go deeper into the scene like I did, you’ll meet some amazing professional musicians.”
Metil is walking down that unsure, lonely road to become one of those amazing musicians. He recently recorded his debut cd and recruited a drummer and bassist as part of his backing band.
While Austin''s dominant punk and metal genres are among his influences, Metil is musically and lyrically more a kindred spirit of the acoustic singer/songwriter school of music. The acoustic rock-flavored songs and introspective lyrics on his debut cd can be traced back to his musical,
church-going roots in Minnesota. Metil''s college Philosophy degree also contributed in an indirect way to his songwriting process.
"My lyrics aren''t philosophical in nature, but I do think it affected how I think," admits Metil. "When I think about the song structure, and especially about the lyrics, I feel them deeper and think about them a lot deeper now."
Even though it''s his first recording, the 11 songs on his self-titled debut cd reflect a musical maturity and lyrical presence of a world-traveled, veteran performer.
"I pour everything in me into the songs," Metil confides. "It''s all really personal, but it''s not directly the first impression people get when they listen. Once they really hear the lyrics and go deeper, they see that it''s always biographical. I''m not one of those songwriters that writes as a
character -it''s all me. The lyrics come out very personal and subtle but layered and autobiographical."
