“I am not out to impress people with smarts. I just want to sing my song.”
Rachel Margaret’s music career has long been in the works, considering that she started composing music when she was only six years old, coming up with melodies and then learning to play and compose on the piano when she was seven. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Rachel went on to study music for film at the Ecole Normale Superieur de Musique in Paris, France. From there, she wasted no time, making a name for herself with a unique blend of acoustic/synth pop. That fresh sound is showcased on Rachel’s latest effort, Buena Vista Park.
“It takes a rare brand of musician to be able to create such a high level of emotional content on a track, but this trend is present throughout all of Buena Vista Park,” says https://www.tradebit.com. “Simply put, Rachel Margaret is an artist whose stock can only go up from here. Pick this EP up.”
This year, Rachel will be taking her own unique focus on pop and hitting the road, accompanied by her new supporting band, as she works to support and spread the word about Buena Vista Park. She says she hopes her audience walks away from each performance feeling “uplifted, inspired, connected,” and if her new EP is any indication, they probably will.
“I think success is really all about expanding your audience,” she says. “I want to connect with people, so I’m always looking to make my music more accessible. It’s a craft, to write interesting music, but also in a way that people ‘get it.’ I could write something extremely esoteric, and there’s value in that. But I’m really interested in transmitting a message, in connecting with people.”
That explains why Rachel is so eager to get her music out there for all to hear. In addition to hitting the road, writing and recording with other artists, and putting the pieces in place to complete a full-length album later this year, Rachel’s song, “Landfill,” will be featured on volume seventeen of Foghorn Records’ compilation, SoundsLikeCafe, to be released on July 17, 2007. Past volumes have included songs by artists such as Corinne Bailey Rae and Beth Orton.
So, with all of this going on, what is Rachel’s biggest challenge? “To steer clear of people who want me to write just like everyone else and embrace people who tell me to ‘go, do, be,’” she says. In that regard, Rachel has surrounded herself by a sort of musical support group, including the international DJs who have remixed her material, and folks like Grammy-nominated songwriter Bonnie Hayes. “I enjoy working with innovative types,” says Rachel, “pushing the boundaries of music.” And from the sounds of what she has done so far, that approach seems to be working rather well.
