A Great Jazz CD!!!!!! February 3, 2003

The harmonica is an instrument that has had a hard time finding acceptance in the world of Jazz. It is not a part of most bands and when it is included, it rarely gets used for more than a novelty solo instrument. There have been some Jazz masters who have done wonderful things; Toots Thielemans, Howard Levy, Charles Leighton, William Galison and others, but generally speaking, Jazz harmonica players have to form their own bands in order to be heard.
Sandy Weltman is one such player who is making a name for himself in the world of Jazz. A disciple of the great Howard Levy, Weltman, who is also a virtuoso Jazz banjo player, is helping to take the harmonica into new directions.
This CD is an excellent example of what Mr. Weltman can do. It recording features the Carolbeth True Trio on bass, piano and drums and theyre as tight of a back-up band as one can hope for. Weltman plays nimbly of over works by Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Jobim, Monk and others as well as a couple of compositions of his own. He takes each pieces and uses them to make his harmonica sing. The CD covers a wide range of Jazz Styles from traditional to modern and Weltman is equally adept at all of them. There isnt a weak song on the CD and I definitely recommend that you give it a listen.
